taking pictures of men and women

can someone tell me exactly if there is a law about taking pictures of men and women in qatar or if it is just "not a nice thing to do". I read that it is illegal to take pictures of women wearing a niqab especially... why if they are unrecognizable?.. I often find myself restraining to take same pictures just because I don't want to offend anyone.. how far can I go?

I had a Qatari man intentionally run into my vehicle this weekend, pass me on the sidewalk, and then try to drive away. I followed him, and when he saw was taking photos of his license plate, he stopped. I took a picture of his face when so he couldn't tell the police that he wasn't driving or send someone else to the police station. He was very angry, and the police told me that I should not take his photo, but they would not say that it was illegal.

So, you respect the culture of your host country and it's people.

This sounds crazy but before doing anything: think about "location...location...location"...hehehehehe

Milco, this is not ITALY..It's a middle east country..And i am sure, no WOMEN in ABAYA would allow you to take their snaps evenif you gather your courage to ask about their permission....:D

And forget about PUBLISHING their photographs..You will be inviting un-necessary trouble for u then...Better be careful..

thanks for your replies... to the ones asking why I want to take pictures of women wearing abaya, simply because I find them intresting and some nice pictures would come out.

about the permission issue ..I come from a country (Italy)where you don't need to ask permission to take photographs of people in a public place, you only need to ask permission if you want to publish those photographs

One should ALWAYS ask for permission to take pictures of other people, no matter where one is.

I remember when we went to this "eagle race" near Ras Laffan. My friend wanted to take pictures of the locals but I told him we need to ask permission first.

He approached a local family in their tent and gestured the camera. They smiled and agreed to pose for the camera.

But others would just shake their head and walk away...

"how far can I go?'

Common sense!

This is a conservative society. There are plenty of things to photograph apart from women in abayas and noqab.

i think there is nothing wrong if u ask them since they were fully covered, when we were in souq waqif we asked one qatari guy if we can take a pic.with him as a souvenir and he didnt refused same as we did with qatari ladies.

It isn't against the law to be specific, but it's against local customs as far as taking pictures of women is concerned.Women find it offensive to take their pictures. But why not go for non-human subjects? taking pics of people, whether men or women is always offensive without their permission.

It not a law but it is the right of a person to respect his/her privacy. What would you feel is somebody just take your or your family picture without your permission?

ask your friends to wear it and then take their photo.

Its not nice to take pics of ladies in Abaya, some of them dont really like it.

Altough their Abaya are skin tight they dont want to reveal their figure to others....:(
