Fair chance for Qatar to win 2022 bid: Thawadi

DOHA Qatar would offer a compact and unique World Cup with around 3.2 billion prime time TV viewers and 2 billion fans in the region who could reach Doha within four hours to watch the matches in 2022.

Addressing a press meet on Saturday, CEO of Qatar 2022 Bid Committee Hassan al Thawadi said, "Qatar has a good chance to win the bid as it is not only Qatar's bid but that of the whole region to bring the mega football event to the Middle East for the first time in the history of the game.

As a team, we are positive." He said the six-member FIFA inspection team, led by Harold Mayne-Nicholls, would reach Doha on Tuesday to assess the tangible and intangible aspects of Qatar's bid.

"They would evaluate our infrastructure and facilities for fans, including transport and other facilities Qatar was going to offer.

But one thing I am sure about is that Qatar has limitless potential to offer to the team to stand in the first row with other serious bidders.

We want to leave a lasting impression on the visiting team," Thawadi said.

FIFA's executive committee will vote to decide the hosts for 2018 and 2022 World Cups at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on December 2. The inspection team has already visited the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, England, Spain, Portugal and Belgium and Netherlands.

Qatar will be the last stop of the team before it submits the report.

The CEO of the Bid Committee said Qatar had already the second generation cooling technology in place in its stadiums.

Qatar would offer the fans the opportunity to see more than one match in a day as no stadium would be more than an hour's drive apart from one another.

He said the fans would also be able to stay in the same accommodation throughout the tournament, making their travel to Qatar cost-effective as well as time-saving.

Talking about the number of spectators during the matches, Thawadi said that Qatar had geographic location to its great advantage.

"We will have 2 billion fans in the region by 2022.

Since the people of the Middle East and the Arab world were football-crazy, there would always be a sea of spectators for the matches.

Additionally, hosting a World Cup close to India with a billion-plus population will also ensure huge spectator support to tournament.

Incidentally, the Indian team will be here to play in the Asian Cup next year," he said.

The CEO said it would be an opportunity for Qatar to change the world's perception and showcase our strong points.

It would be for the first time that Qatar would showcase itself as envisioned by the National Vision 2030.

"We will also bolster our case by highlighting our international standing in sports.

It will be an opportunity for us to bridge the gap between the East and the West.

Our bid has full support of the governments, associations and private sector players in the region.

The fact that the people in the region are passionate about the game of soccer lends extra support to our claim to host the 2022 Cup in Qatar.

We have also the support of many countries from around the world.

We have certain advantages that no other countries in the race have, like flights connectivity and time taken for journey from other countries as Qatar is in the heart of the Middle East.

We expect 700 million passionate soccer fans watching the 2022 World Cup in Qatar," said a confident Thawadi.

Referring to the World Cup in South Africa, Communication Director of the Bid Committee Nasser al Khater said when Ghana was playing the whole African continent was supporting the team.

"This is how a region benefits and shows unity.

We are focused on our bid and want to build up our infrastructure and other facilities in the next ten years," he added.

Thawadi, keep dreaming its for free. Last time at Asian games you could not fit all the players in your country. They had to stay at their yachts. Instead of wasting money on 2022 try helping some poor people in country. Increase salary of those who survive for 650QR a month. Try to end the cruel slavery system in this country.

Wait a minute, can i send this to the Fifa 2022 approval committee?

'and 2 billion fans in the region who could reach Doha within four hours to watch the matches in 2022.'

Where exactly will they all fit?

'The CEO of the Bid Committee said Qatar had already the second generation cooling technology in place in its stadiums.'

What second generation cooling technology? They clearly only sit in the VIP areas when they watch matches.... Last time I was in a stadium, and it wasn't even summer, I thought I was going to be roasted alive!!!

Residents should boycott it. It will only increase the cost of living in Qatar.
