*Mind Your Internet Manners*
Just as in your real everyday life, manners are important on the Internet as
well. Although it may seem like you can say anything to anybody for any
reason (and you can, actually), there may still be repercussions to such
actions. Getting slammed (or spammed) with angry emails will be the likely
response from many, or you may be barred from your favorite chat room. You can save yourself a large amount of grief if you follow a few simple rules.
- In all likelihood, you will not argue anybody to your position.
- DO NOT CAPITALIZE ALL LETTERS. On the Internet, all capitals signify you are yelling and will be treated as such.
- Using all small letters will indicate you are mumbling.
- Pause (and count to 10) before you send anything. This brings up the next point.
- Everything you send is permanent someplace. People can post it, keep it for later use or whatever so BE CAREFUL. Sorry, I didn't mean to yell.
- Since what you write is the only way people will know who you are (they can't see your expressions, the color of your skin, size of your waistband, or anything else unless you post your picture on the net someplace), your words are the only way to communicate. Poor spelling indicates you are not very bright. The way to fix this is use a spell checker, but be aware this tool will not check usage, tense or syntax. You should still read what you have written before hitting the "send" button, because if you don't, the horse is out of the barn.
- Look before you leap. This is simple common sense. When entering a new chat room, watch (I mean read) for awhile to ascertain the mood and discussion. Jumping in too soon may be embarrassing and defy any credibility you might want later.
- Use symbols sparingly. There are common symbols which attempt to add emotion to your words. If you think something might sound sarcastic, you may put a smiley face at the end of the sentence, like this :-)
Here are a few more just for fun:
;-) equals wink
:-( equals frown
:-> equals sarcastic
>:> equals devilish
:'-( equals crying
:-o equals surprised
:') equals crying happily
:-0 equals Uh-0h
:-@ equals screaming
:-& equals Tongue-tied
>:-> equals mad
<:-I equals dunce, like in, "sorry, but I don't understand"
:-D equals a big smile
8. Check the word "Netiquette" in one of the major search engines like
Yahoo! and you will find locations that will expound on many of these
principals.
The bottom line is this: Be pleasant, try to get along, and don't give your
opinion unless you are either asked for it or it seems otherwise
appropriate.
When you go online, you take on a persona not unlike the personality you
give when you interact with other people. Given time and effort, you may
become as popular (or more so) on the internet because of your insight,
compassion, willingness to listen, or just because you are a good person.
This is the way we all make friends, whether in the Real or the Virtual
world.
Someone forgot all manners in internet manner thread.

I will stand by your side since most of you have a valid point.
On the other hand there has been a recent increase of postings in which compresed words are being used; say like mobile SMS slangs.
And sometimes it is difficult to follow the discussion or ideas while trying to figure out "what do they mean".

lovely, in my short experience at QatarLiving.. i must state that many in here are yet to observer manners. may i point out what in my opinion is important:
1.In all likelihood, you will not argue anybody to your position.
7.Look before you leap. This is simple common sense. When entering a new chat room, watch (I mean read) for awhile to ascertain the mood and discussion. Jumping in too soon may be embarrassing and defy any credibility you might want later.
Behave gurl in here :)
We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.
nice. minding your manners sure is the best way to go.
but as most people say, its really not necessary for spelling or grammar to be exactly correct. as long as we understand what you're saying (or others) its fine. even writers make those mistakes sometimes. :)
good manners and right conduct---applies to everything in life, doncha'll think? it's good to get a reminder once in a while as sometimes one does seem to forget.
:-D
it doesn't matter if you spell wrong as long as they understand it.

Reminders
Manners dont have any Culture, region or creed
as cynbob said it's all common sense...... but sad to say not the case now a days
[img_assist|nid=50852|title=hmm|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
No there not mandatory. So many of these "manners" are common sense.
Thanks for the reminder.
Are these so called internet manners mandatory? do you expect people from different countries of different cultures and upbringings with different levels of education to follow suit? where are these manners based from? from the western culture? you expect every one in all corners of this earth to abide?
Pause (and count to 10) before you send anything. This brings up the next point.

hi to all! i think, wether using the correct spelling or making ur sentence gramatically correct, the important thing is ur sharing sensible thoughts...may it be wrong spelling but u inspire people of ur words...u can spell them correctly but all u do is to irritate people...
it's ur choice...after all, no one is perfect...
"never allow somebody to be ur priority when u r just his/her option"
correct spelling is good but we r not in school or exams ... so chillout on net ... thanks

manners are not rules
[img_assist|nid=50852|title=hmm|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
Sucks.. rules rules rules.. anywher and everywhere. if there is someplace wher there is lil freedom of life, gr8 ones think brain storm and make rules to kill the happiness.
Be free dudes n dudettes..just ignore the rules..
be casual and see th way life flows..it will surely be better...
Just have your normal mannerse of life.. dont let anyone create one for the internet only now.
I agree comments should be within social boundaries and with respect for all. But spelling mistakes is the least of the worries. There are so many people who do not have English as their first language and I know that if I tried to write in a language not my mother tongue there would be tons of mistakes.
Love you all.
They say,
Every new language you speek opens a new dimension,
a new culture,
the nice thing here is that we are all multi cultural...
And yes manners manner..

Well said. I'm full of admiration for anyone who can master another language.. even conversationally.
English is a horribly hard language to get to grips with I would expect.
Goodness knows, teaching English has messed my spelling right up! (You might want to check out the spelling of your username though.....) ;)
Sounds like a familiar theme ;)
well said
Sabby - try posting a new forum topic about this; http://www.qatarliving.com/node/add/forum
Greetings from Canada!
Hope every one is doing ok.
I need a bit help and here I throw my question.
My husband is n Doha and I like to send him a nice cake on his birthday, which is in two weeks from now. I am almost lost on google to find a suitable service who deliver sweets or cakes for such occassions.
If any one know a good one then just kindly locate the website to place an online order.
Waiting!
thanks for the reminders and the "Netiquettes "
the topic should be named 'USING FORUMS.. for dummies' =p
I think this should be removed! As nobody except the British understands this concept! :-> LOL
Thank u for the Etiquettes or as U said Netiquettes
Also I agree on point # 5 as anything appearing on such blogs comes up in all search engines if not most of them bring them up
Regarding spellings sometime people tend to write slangs which do not have a spelling so do pardon us
But I am Cool & will be cool lol........
CL GUY
INTERESTING...LOVED IT!
sorry...
Yelling???
thanks for the info....
cool
I completely agree on the spelling front. Do keep in mind that Qatar and this forum is made up of a vast number of nationalities. One can't state that poor spelling is an indication that one is not bright!!
I totally agree with u on many points.but thinking some one is not bright enough just by simple errors in english is not true, many countrys where english is not used as first language or as a learning language at all people from those countrys might have some difficulty using english, but still learn english to interact with other people so in this case spelling mistakes are common.......
A life unexamined is not worth living
agree
He is only stating things that have been and always will be discussed here on forums.
It is true that people often take awrong impression because of an opinion which is expressed and often end up in threatening and inappropriate mails have been sent to a number of people. This is not ok in my opinion.
If there is a spell check available it is ok to use it, why not, it may not help the grammer for others who don't speak so well but it helps the understanding part.
What is true, is you don't know the partners who you are discussing with and also don't know what they are capable of. The internet is a jungle full of good and bad people.
This is just a suggestion and not an order.
Spelling mistake???????????......come on you serious??????you definately need a chill pill.

I disagree with the poor spelling meaning that one is not very bright! If english isn't the first language, surely it is acceptable to not spell words correctly. IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE NOT BRIGHT! couldn't resist that ....
