Age?? What should be the limit?
A 13-year-old American boy has become the youngest person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, his family says.

My question is "Is this right practice?". Despite his success, I think that this should not have been allowed. Age factor should always be considered as there is a huge risk involved. If something had gone wrong, who was to be blamed? What next? 5 year old at the top of Everest?
True Happy, Its so sad to see children being pushed to their limit so early in life.
....Hey folks in here, don't pick on age 30!
....In 2008, 30-year old Saudi Farouk Al-Zuman reached the top of Mount Everest.

.... drmana, especially that usually the parents are the ones who're actually super adamant to push their little ones to such competitions.
Happy, I think competition of any kind shouldn't be for children. They should learn without mental pressure of excelling than their friends. Children are losing their childhood very fast these days. But thats different issue altogether. Here I am concerned only about physical safety of the child as I am sure climbing mountain is not an easy task and requires decision making at critical points.
.....drmana, I see what you mean. Would you have the same concerns for children engaged in baby/ child beauty pageants? Such contests may be seen as dangerous, but in a different way though.
Anyway these are exceptions drmana. I am sure out of million only a handful will try it based on the perceptions of the parents.
Happy, its just that I somehow feel that 13years is not the age when one should head to the summit of Mt. Everest. He is too young for it. He has done it well no doubt but the question of "what if" bothers me.
.....drmana, as long as Romero is physically fit, why not climb a mountain?
Well done that boy... If his parents feel that he’s old enough, then so be it..
yes rishi, fame is worth more than life it seems.
drmana, people who reach the top come to the limelight..nobody gives a damn for those who die or get lost in the blizzards..
So we don't allow children to drive for other's safety not his own?
That little boy climbed Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro aged 10. Wasn't that too much early. As a parent, I would never have allowed that....not even in full supervision.
drmana a driver not only endangers himself but others on the road. Difference.
if there is a regulatory body for mountaineering, there should be an age limit as they would be responsible for the safety of the mountaineers as well.
no one knows how good or bad is he to be able to reach the everest unless and untill he tries atleast once. in the process, an over enthusiastic young boy or girl, if allowed, may die of frost-bite or lack of oxygen etc.
the race to achieve as being the youngest could be dangerous..and in this race one out of a hundred may reach the summit and rest perish due to being 'over adventurous"..
if we care for people's lives...age limit should be there and if we don't care, let all aspiring children come and perish on the foot of the everest..
Should be allow 13 year old to drive as well under adult supervision then?
He was not by himself drmana, he had adults supervising him.
Older age generally means maturity, isn't it?
I don't question that younger ones can be capable, sometimes more than the old ones but climbing everest is a life endangering task....can a 13 year old decide to risk his life by himself? That's is my only query.
drmana who decides that a 25 year old is good enough?
Older doesn't always mean smarter
Who decides what is good enough?
drmana how to judge whether all of them are mature enough to vote or not so we just generalise and stop all of them from voting.
Then why are they called minors? All children should be allowed to vote as well then.
If you are good enough, you are old enough.
:)
LP is right. I'm going to kill myself right now for being over 30.
if i were to call the shots, would put an age limit of 18 yrs...it makes sense.
U never know drmana..Even 10yr old would try his/her hand sometime later..
Everybody over 30 should be killed.
