extraxted from the article:

"...but given the scale of poverty - an estimated 40% of India’s 1.1bn population lives on less than $1.25 a day - Indians need to become way more generous, said Bain partner Arpan Sheth."

Guys,

The fact is your country has so many extremely poor people and so poor infrastructures and so many millionaires.

Something must be wrong there!

The millionaires, of course they give for charity, but is it enough when compared with the obscene luxury they love to show.

If such huge differences coexist, something is wrong in your society!

Whatever, it’s your country and it’s your misery and apparently non-Indians are not allowed to express in QL their opinion about India. Feel free to live comfortable with it side by side.

Note well and don’t feel so personal about it: what I am saying here is valid in any country. It just happens we are talking about India here. Wealth after a certain limit becomes obscene and insult to those who live in extreme poverty!

Maybe the ones in US show more money being given to charity than the actual amount in the books to avoid their money going to the IRS ;-)

Besides, most of them who actually donate money for charity prefer not to publicise it nor record it some lame ass newspaper's so called "charity survey".

@ Nic - On that note they need to shut down MTV Cribs first.

Love thy foe - unless they pull out a gun at ya.

Well Rightly said by my friend. It is shamefull and bad to publicly what you have given as charity and if that is done it is no longer called charity. Charity is done by ones willingness and it must never be forced upon by any means.

I wish the word charity if well understood there wont be any debate on this subject. God bless

Actually most of these new billionaires in India pay the best salaries in the industry Nic. I don't see them exploiting their workers, I don't know on what basis you are making these statements.

Extreme quantities of money can be gained even without exploiting the compatriots and paying them just what is required to be paid. One can't pay a tea boy US$10000/- a month just because the business is profitable and if the profit earned by the entity is divided based on head count and discounting for hirearchy can allow to pay that much. Commercializing the products in the international market at international prices is plain simple business acumen, nothing to do with the poverty or no poverty.

Considering the number of Millionaires in US and UK...that % is not that high....In India the % is less because the population is much higher...so obliviously the % will be less.. .6 % of 1000 is grater or lesser than 2.2 of 10?? ..no wonder they are bad in Math..lol

And Moreover we don’t publish what we give out...so maybe its not on the records...:) We have a saying the left hand should not know what the right hand is giving.....so why would they inform the media..lol

It’s an insult for the poor people in India to see how Bolywood actors and other Indian millionaires live arrogantly in abnormally huge extravaganza, side by side to hunger and extreme poverty!

Extreme quantities of money gained by exploiting their compatriots, paying them miserable salaries and commercializing their products into the international market at international prices!

Any idiot that comes on TV exhibiting his/her huge gold plated palace, should be ashamed and publicly accounted for the misery that affects most of his/her country!
