Baby Monkey at the Souq, what to do?
By nightwalker77 •
Last night I saw a baby monkey at the Souq (not sure what kind) and I was really upset. It was crying as there were kids around poking it, hitting it and it was just a baby.
Now where do you report this to, as it was probably an illegal animal? Poor thing was just so cute and very upset.
Good information its in my phone ready to contact when need be.
According to the CITES website (www.cites.org), the enforcement authorities for Qatar are contactable via the following:
Ministry of Environment
PO Box 7634
Doha
Telephone +974 420 7177
Fax +974 420 7839
Email [email protected] or [email protected]
As Chelsea said, you can report what you see to the authorities and they will confiscate them.
Hopefully one day there will be no more cases of animals at the souq or in the atrocious conditions that they are kept in at the various pet shops. If we all make enough noise and voice your opinions to shop owners and staff, potential buyers (see Chelsea's post above) and the authorities, this one day will be very soon.
very very sad to read that
shame on the people whoever got a stone heart, treat animals cruealy..
dnt they think that if one day they tehmselves or their children or some1 they love treated badly like they treat the animals, wht they will feel.
yes i agree dnt buy any pet frm the pet shops plz
hope all shops selling pets get a ban on selling pets.Insha Allah Azzawajal.

There are no official animal rights group in Qatar but it IS illegal to sell any kind of primate without a CITES certificate. If you ever see an exotic animal like this, ask the owners of the shop to produce the paperwork for it. If they can't, you can report them to the CITES office here in Qatar and they will go and confiscate the animal. We at QAWS have had several animals confiscated in the past. Unfortunately it will be taken to the zoo but at least there it will get the correct care and diet it needs.
Please don't buy any cats, dogs, or exotics from the Souq as it encourages the trade and the pet shop owners will just get more in. Please be aware that primates can carry illnesses which are transferable to humans and should never be kept as pets. If you see anyone trying to buy a primate, you can normally scare them off by asking about whether they have had their Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and HIV tests completed! Cats & dogs bought from the Souq are likely to have health problems such as ringworm, ear and eye infections, worms, ticks and/or diseases such as parvovirus which can be fatal to puppies.

It seems that animals are treated like things the way they are caged, fed etc. Its time the govt. steps in and makes regulations as its human health that will also be affected. They should realize that animals can make people sick as well. I am sure they are not supposed to sell monkeys but without any enforcement by the authorities nothing will happen, they should be fined that would stop them, wish they would give me the job! Maybe it would help if everytime any of us see this we call the police until they get sick of the calls just a thought? I got a call about my missing dog but the person just kept asking about a reward so I am sure they have my dog but all I have is a number! Nice!
jasmine- yeah it was at souq waqif where the birds and cats are. Sitting out in a cage like all the other animals.
It wasn't just the kids bothering the monkey, it was the fact that they were even selling it there. It is probably a protected species and illegal to sell, and it was just a baby which should be with its' mother.
jasmine........ I never understood why parents allow their children to do this?
I would whack my child, but then he has love and respect for animals, so I wouldn't have to.

I was there last week and don't think that the kids who were kicking the Persian cat in it's cage were Qatari. I was so close to buying it because I felt so sorry for it but that just makes them sell more. Was this at the bird souq?
Helloqatar, I have no idea where they came from - unfortunately they weren't wearing a sign on their heads! They could be from timbuktoo for all I know. Really the point is no child or adult should be cruel to an animal.
Be careful, you can't speak like this about a Qatari child. If it was expat children, it is OK to talk about bad behavior.
It disgusts me the way these poor animals are treated.... I hope there are animal rights and something can for once get done about it..
Thanks Mess, but then why aren't they down at the souq EVERY DAY?

i think there is organization in qatar for animal rights
Lol brit! My sheep are well cared for and loved!

we need to ask the right questions and report it to the MOI. This way of abusing a fellow living being is not what the statute or conscience allows you to..
please call 999 and report then and there such things.
They can help you

Cruelty of any kind, to any animal cannot be justified...
As for sheep ....................
Are there no animal rights group in Doha? Maybe its about time animal lovers on QL formed one?

it broke my heart seeing the baby, I had to leave otherwise I would have caused a scene.
Where are all the animal experts??? I wish I would help the poor thing
That just breaks my heart, reading a post like this!

DaRuDe was at the souq drinking coffee, sure you guys didn't recognise him? lol!!!
That is so sad. Cruelty to animals should be dealt with, especially at the souk where they apper to be treated very badly. (need I mention bunnies in dresses and birds dyed all sorts of colours?) I dont know who you can report it to but what makes me really mad in addition, is why the parents let their kids scream at and taunt animals. I saw a child the other day literally screaming - the most piercing scream I've ever heard, at a parrot and the mother and father just stood there and watched. I wanted to bang their heads together.
:( SAD
