I have a similar question... I am moving out in May with my husband (newly wed before we arrive), and 11 year old son. We live a fairly quiet life in Cyprus anyway, so as long as we are connected via internet and satellite tv, we will not feel too away from home. but is there a safe environment for my son? children he can play with? are there more residential areas with international families living close by? these are important as I know he will need to settle in quickly and its easier if there are more children in the area. I will be working flat out, so I can settle anywhere without any problems. Any advice would be great. I have looked through this site, but without knowing towns and their lcoations, it is hard to know where are the best areas. I will be working at the West Bay District and I am trign to get my son into the Qatar International School as a collegue's daughter goes there, which might help.

Thank you!

i have the same situation as you are.. Try to look and read more about qatar on this site. It will be a big help as you prepare yourself to move here. You can read just about anything here.. Customs and Socializing are the best subjects.

Well, dating scene is kind of weird here. Boys outnumber girls for like 10 to 1 or something...lol. Better date/hang out with girls that you know (from your office or neighborhood). Starting a conversation with a stranger here is considered quite weird. That has been my experience for the last 2 months. Welcome to this wonderland!

There are lots of things you can do for fun besides drinking :p

Tennis, Squash, B ball, or soccer to name a few, it can be difficult to stay fit here but if you get to meet some sport enthusiasts you will be able to have fun with it.

Life isn't too expensive here, rent can be very expensive but groceries, dining out, and clothes are just about affordable.

There are lots of proper coffee shops, a good cup of coffee won't cost you more than 20 QR at Starbucks.

can be a lot of fun. not that much variety (it's a tiny islamic country, after all!) and it's too expensive, but the people here are really great and i always enjoy being out. i don't think there is much dating in doha, but there does seem to be a thriving "hook-up" culture....
