Woman harrassed by man at Villagio

Rolling Stone
By Rolling Stone

Earlier this week my wife was about to leave her parking spot at Villagio when an arab man dressed in western cloth's (mid 20's she guesses) knocked on the front passenger window. She lowered the window to see what he wanted and he told her he wanted to buy the car. When she explained that the car was not for sale he started to say how much he "liked her" and repeatedly asked for her mobile number. He volunteered that he worked for QTel.

Despite my wife explaning that she was married and asking him to leave her alone he continued to harrass her, leaning on the passenger window and refusing to leave. She tried to drive the window up but he refused to leave and now the electrical drive on the passenger window is broken. He parked his car behind my wife so she could not drive away and he said he would only leave after providing his mobile (obviously she wouldn't provide hers).

Clearly this was very disturbing for my wife and I was on a business trip so unable to do anything at the time. We'll have to report this to the Traffic Police to get the car repaired and I'm hoping the Police will take this matter seriously and investigate further. There may be some prints on the passenger window and if he can be identified I hope the authorities will make an example of him as a deterrent to others in future.

I also discussed with my wife and suggesed that if anything like this occurs again, she lock the doors immediately, refuse to lower the window and if the individual refuses to leave she presses the panic button on the car key FOB or presses and holds the car horn until he leaves. Easy to make all these suggestions after the event!

Exactly the same experience happened to a young lady I know, given her car is unusual and not available here in Qatar she believed his story, he also blocked her car she gave her fathers phone number to the man. Maybe all the men are using this as a way to bother women, I say stay in your car and honk the horn they will not like the attention and call the police.

...stand up to them and demand relevant documents. If they aare kids, beat them up. I know of similar incidents where groups of girls were harassed by Saudi type maniacs but those guys ran away the moment one girl pretended to talk to her Qatari boyfriend. I think this works here. As for the kids, I know there are many ill mannered local kids. Someone should tell their parents to teach them some manners.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.

Yes, clearly there are many things my wife could have done at the time including taking a note of his license plate and retaining his mobile number which she erased immediately after he left.

Being Indonesian, she was concerned that she may be accused of soliciting this kind of behaviour and end up being persecuted herself. I don't think this is the case but all this was going through her mind at the time. Hindsight is always 20/20 right?

I want to add that we feel generally safe in Qatar. I would be more concenred for my families general safety & security in a western country. I guess the fact that it happened here at all was shocking.

I feel sorry for those people who experienced it. We all should be very careful. I would encourage all of us to take time and talk to our family members what to do if this type of incident happen with them. Giving honks, calling 999 (I think it is 999 here in doha not 911, please correct me if I am wrong), taking pictures, noting down the plate numbers, all are valuable information. Thanks for sharing these information.

tell her also to start taking his picture with her phone (and his car, getting the plate number) while at the same time telling him she will take the photos directly to the police. If this does not scare him off, have her call the police while he is standing right there. Even if he runs off, she can report him to the police, and this will ensure he is not hiding waiting to follow her home.

I also have a bitter experience like that in Abudhabi family park.

My Girl friend cooked nicely and we took that to family park to eat.Since it was tues day night 8PM,I have seen many people making barbe q and also eating their food.My self and my girlfriend sit in a Park main road side bench and we took our food and chatting in decent way.we have noticed some of this country boyes in the age group of 14 to 18 ( i counted 8 people),surrounded us and asked us to show our ID cards( Here RP),we shown to them, then they asked our mobile to hand over them , we both refused and tried to left the place. One boy hold my hand and came closely and i smelt that boy was drunk.I told them if they dont allow us to leave ,then we will call police, one of the boy told he is a CID.I asked him to show the proof. These all happens in the main road of family park but nobody came to help us.Then we forcefully left the place to reach our car,the boys thrown their chappals to us and throwing sticks also to us.It is a horrible experience for us.But god saved us.
