How is social life in Qatar?
Hi everyone and thanks for taking time to read and maybe even reply to my querry. I am a 28-year old male from New Zealand who has recently been offered a job in Doha. I know very little about this place and having hard time making up my mind about whether to go or not. I don't have a family yet and am planning to travel alone. What I am wondering is what is there in Qatar in terms of social activities? I mean things like bars, nightclubs, etc. So basicaly is social/night life in Qatar anything like what it is in the West? Just don't wanna end up being stuck indoors by myself for 24 months!!!
Hey boys and girls. Thanks so much for replying. That clarifies a few things for me. Still thinking thou...
hey Qatar is awesome man. Before getting here u got buddies here in QL to join u in social activities.
dont put too high expectation so you wont be disappointed. Take it as adventure coming to Qatar. You dont have family or kids in the school age, if you dont like the place after you giving it a go you can leave anytime you want.
How about I turn the tables on you:
Give us a list of your regular weekly activities and we'll tell if it is available here or suggest alternatives!
There's bars and clubs but they're nothing special. The social life is definitely not up to western standards, but it ain't non-existent either. Weigh your options, honestly it's all about attitude, if you're up for a new experience, and can handle a little adversity in the beginning...it ain't so bad.
You wont end up stuck indoors for 24 hours, except for when its boiling hot outside and thats just where you want to be!!!!
There are some bars, pubs, nightclubs in 5 star hotels. There are very good restaurants (only restaurants in 5star hotels can serve alcohol).
There are a lot of clubs to join, rugby, hocky, AFL and im sure many more. If you drive outside of Doha there are plenty of beaches. Beaches in Doha tend to be at 5 star hotels again. There's a really nice, long corniche, very popular with walkers and joggers. The Pearl is also somewhere really nice to visit (manmade island). Very good museum as well.
It's not the most exciting country in the world but its certainly not the least!! Well located for travelling overseas and reasonably priced for weekend escapes away.
Accomodation is not of a very high standard (that's my opinion) and is quite expensive, though they say the prices are coming down. Would suggest that you get accomodation included in your package.
I'm sure that others can add to this.
Hope that this helps.
If your first question is about bars and nightlife then Qatar may not be your first choice.
No the social life is not like the west. Yes there are bars and some nightclubs but people here have very dubious moral double standards when it comes to some activities.
Do some searches on QL and you'll understand what I mean.
Yes you can have a good time here but it is not like the west
for you not to be bored..
just enjoy whatever Doha is offering..
Few malls..Few hotels for drinking..
and do some road trip....
that's it...
