This will be my first experience of Ramadan. I want to know for sure the last night I can go out for a drink in the bars before they all close for the month.

For people who are resident here in Qatar and have an apartment or a house of course they can have their own supplies of alcoholic drinks. But I am living in a hotel and I cannot purchase any alcohol. The ban on bars selling alcohol during Ramadan is very inconvenient (and I think unnecessary).

Many people come here to work and don't have what they would call 'friends' here. I have colleagues at work but sometimes it's nice to get away from anything to do with the workplace. Anyway, they maybe have family here and want to spend their time off with their own family. For many people the bar is the best place to relax, meet people, and have a little conversation. It's not just about getting a drink. I don't want to sit in my hotel room all evening and drink by myself. It is the culture in many parts of the world to mix drinking with relaxation, friendliness and sociability.

Jees what a palava for a drink...that's life - so you dont get a drink tomorrow in the bar !! its not the end of the world... you dont get to socialise... well ask your friends to come over and have a chat with them... the things you worry about ....

Because the bar is the only place many of us who are working here can go to meet people, have a chat etc. If the bar is closed I have to stay in my hotel room all night or go to a restaurant and sit by myself and eat food. I like to drink a few drinks at the weekend for relaxation and conversation.

Why do you say it's 50-50? How do they make the final decision? If it has to do with astronomy we should be able to predict to the precise second when it starts.

So basically, the bars will be open, unless they are told to close.

You could always chance it, but it would be a bit of a buzz kill to get kicked out at 6pm.

Better off drinking at home!

I sent email to Ramada Hotel asking if the bars would be open Thursday night. Here is the reply:-

"Thank you for your email.

The bars will be open on Thursday night assuming Ramadan is not called then.

If at any point Ramadan is called that evening then the bars will close straight away."

So how do they decide when Ramadan begins?

Highly unlikely that the bars will be open Thursday night, from my experience in the past.

So it is still doubtful if the bars will be open Thursday night. I will have to phone the hotels myself.

I'm banking on tonight being the last night the bars will open.

Ramadan seems likely to start on Friday, and bars don't open on the evening prior.

I was told by a Muslim girl in our office that Friday is the beginning of Ramadan. She seemed to think that the bars would be open on Thursday night.

I think the bars will be open on Thursday but I am not taking the chance that they will be closed. I better go out tonight if there's a chance this could be the last night. That's extra annoying because I have to work tomorrow so can't sleep in.

SO in other words Da, tonight is the last night to get a drink.

but it depends on those astrologers who use -zero eye sight glasses to find the crescent after sunset. if they find it on thursday night means Friday will be the first and if they find it on Friday after sunset then Saturday will be the first. Now it all depends if their eye sight is good.

For some people, myself included, the only place we can go to socialise and meet people is the bar. I mean you just can't meet people at Starbucks. It's a pity that all the bars must close during Ramadan. Perhaps I should write a letter to the Emir and ask if this policy could be relaxed in the future

No. Tonight is. Ramadan will start at midnight on Friday, so the bars all have to be closed before then. For the most part they just don't open the day before Ramadan. However I've heard that Ramadan's been moved till Saturday.

Somebody told me that Ramadan would begin this Friday. So that means Thursday is the last night I can get a drink at the bar. Is this correct?
