The short answer is: The 40D is defintely a better camera. Both the 400D and the 1000D is in the entry level range and the 40D is in the enthusiast level range. The real question, however, should be: What's your intended use for a new camera?
If you:
- Have no idea about using a SLR camera,
- Are likely to just leave your camera in "auto" and don't see yourself exploring the camera's full potential,
- Are never gonna get the pictures printed or never have them printed larger than 6x4",
Then I would recommend you save you money and get a 400D/1000D. They're are both very capable camera's in their own right and will produce good results, compared with any compact on the market. Which one of the 2 you should choose, I don't know. I have never used any of them. But according to reviews it seems the 1000D is a marginally better camera.
If you:
- See yourself being genuinely interested in photography and would like to explore this hobby more,
- Wold like to print your pictures at larger sizes,
- Already own good compatible lenses,
Then I would suggest the 40D. This is a better camera and with good lenses (ie not the standard kit lens), produces fantastic results.
