Anti-Smoking Campaign

somwerNdmiddle
By somwerNdmiddle

Well this is a good sign about this campaign, but they forgot the malls were a lot of people especially families come and unwind, i was at landmark yesterday with my family and passed by the food court and starbucks, nothing has changed really. I see people still smoking inside the food court and at starbucks. Is this just plain ignorance or just pure arrogance?

Whatever it is, but if the law says you can't smoke in a public place then don't!!!

I can't drink in the park, so I don't. I can't eat pork, I try to, but fail.

So if the law says don't smoke in public, don't.

If we see people, usually(Arabs) smoking in public, we will then question why certain things are banned here.

If you stick to one law and not the other, we will question it.

If you want a ciggy with your coffee so be it. But don't then come all 'conservative, when it comes to other things.

You,smokers in public, (usually local) break the law. So why expect others to abide by the laws.

I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!

"Quiting to smoke is Easy - I have Done many times..."

Hey Not my words... my Hostel MAtes used to use these punch lines...

I don smoke... But I have no right to say to people not to smoke.... as if Addictions are Bad.. So is Beer..

And Damn if I hear a word Against it.... So mutual respect No problems with Smokers,,, but there habits or conduct yap....

Beer even if is Bad,, is only for you... people besides you don passive Drink...

So not smoking around children and family should be taken up as a Right if Smoking is a Duty....

Or is it the other way round???

Sorry, I know I am a disgrace! but, well, what can I do? It's the heat (I like smoking in open spaces preferably).

But I do feel better! I guess I might go back to the bad habits once I go back home =..(

And wherever in the world I am, even as a smoker, I do respect the bans, because it is my right to smoke, but also, my rights finish when they can harm other people.

And I feel ashamed whenever kids see me smoking... for some reason, I don't like it.

Shoeaddict, no one directly accused you of anything.

I was speaking generally about smokers. They are free to smoke however much they like, but they need to understand that their smoke negatively impacts on other, which is why there are laws supposedly to prevent them from smoking in enclosed spaces.

Unfortunately inside Doha shopping centers its still generally permissable, even if it is technically illegal, to smoke inside.

I guess that's the equivalent of blowing smoke straight into the Emir's face and saying 'screw you and your anti-smoking law, I'll smoke where I want.'

Theres a difference, indicated by the question mark in my comment.

But you did say, and I quote...

"but i do not smoke near infants, mothers carrying infants, children and families.i carry the burden of that, but i feel that i have to be responsible in doing so."

But no where here did you say you also DO NOT smoke near adults on their own with no families, did you ?

Too right, Mr Paul.

Shoeaddict - if you want to smoke, fine.

But if you are in an enclosed space, you have no right to smoke near anyone. Man, woman or child.

I'm not asking smokers to quit, I'm just telling them to learn to read and smoke outside.

SMOKING NAZIS

Mr Paul, sheesha has been removed from a lot of establishments. One of the more famous sheesha cafes, Nawakhatha was recently closed down.

I don't care one way or another if people chose to smoke. I have my vices too, and I know that they harm me.

If people want to smoke and risk developing throat, lung or mouth cancer, or hardening of the arteries, or a stroke, then fine, that's their business.

But I do think it's very arrogant of people to sit beneath the sign advising that the Emir himself passed a law banning smoking, and then light up.

Such people obviously think the Emir is a kill joy who should just shut up and stop ruining their day. If they had any respect for the Emir, and any respect for the law, they wouldn't be smoking in cafes.

Regarding the article, it's complete bollocks anyway. There are no statistics provided to demonstrate the smoking is becoming less popular.

understand that why cigerattes are being sold in Qatar anyways. It selling, purchasing should be banned from every country. This is the only way to curb this bad habit of smoking.

Furthermore, heavey fines & closure of such outlets must be enforced so they can make sure that nobody is smoking in their shops/restaurans.

smoke - firstly, I just want to be clear that I'm not preaching to people to stop smoking. I'm all for freedom of choice.

I'm glad that we now agree that nicotine is a drug, and hence the majority of cigarettes are also a drug.

And it's not the nicotine in cigarettes that is harmful. The nicotine just provides the 'high' and causes the addiction.

By smoke• 10 May 2009 12:53
smoke

Look i'm not arguing that smoking in a non smoking zone is right, I have a problem where every self righteous person says things like ban smoking completely, increase prices or some other lame idea in the hope that they can completely stop people from smoking. I mean thats our bloody choice, same thing with drugs not everyone wants to do it but its a choice we should have the right to choose its our freaking life.

tallg tobacco is not a drug, its the nicotine in the tobacco that is addictive :p you do know you get nicotine free tobacco thats not harmful to the body right?

I'd argue for making cigarettes just like alcohol. You have to be a non-muslim, and buy it at QDC at hotel-style-prices. You should also have a monthly maximum.

Another idea would be to classify it as "drugs" and completely ban it, imprisoning anybody caught smoking.

If people want to smoke that's fine. It's their choice. But when there's a law that states that they shouldn't smoke in certain places then they should abide by that. I think that's the issue here - people ignoring the law. It needs be enforced.

it's a campaign in name only. They like to make banners, have a news conference and get their pictures in the paper. Then they are done. That is the extent of their campaign. Don't expect anything in the way of enforcement to happen. Too many Qataris like to smoke and will not accept anyone telling them that they can't and Yes, it is arrogance, they know that is is bad and against the law, but think they are above the law.
