Action sought on Cross Dressing

Gypsy
By Gypsy

From today's Gulf Times:

Preachers at mosques focused their attention during the Friday sermon on the strange phenomenon of girls dressed as boys in Arab robes and headgear and roaming in public parks in Doha, according to reports published in the local Arabic press.
They have also been noticed smoking cigarettes and hubble-bubble. This is a sign of the predominance of destructive ideas and values from the West on the minds of the youth in this country, said many of the preachers.
They also attributed this to the prevalence of chatting on the internet, blind aping of Western lifestyles and the spread of the culture of consumerism.
They called upon the authorities concerned to take stringent action against those indulging in such behaviour.
They pleaded to the media to play a more responsible role and to the parents to impose a strict vigilance on the behaviour of their adolescent children.

So do you think they're dressing as boys because they are lesbian, or because they get more freedom if they dress as boys?

I think the UN should agree to outlaw the defamation of western values. Every little thing that someone in the East doesn't like and it's a case of the evil west being responsible.

Well if they can have laws against defaming religion, then it's only fair that we have one against defamation of the western world. That's half the world's population after all. In fact, go one better and make it incitement to hatred - which is actually what this sort of stuff is beginning to sound like.

Roadtester, that's hilarious!!

Especially since MAC recently signed a deal to sell a range of Dame Edna Everage cosmetics!

Perhaps the Qatarias do aspire to look like women dressed like men dressed like women??

I think ur onto something bleu...I bet they want to be caught and tortured cause they're convinced that having pain inflicted on them will bring pleasure...and that's all because of the West's S&M ideas :P

Tsk tsk tsk...

Maybe they wanted to be caught, just like the princess in "Death of a Princess"... (I was surprised to find it on bittorrent, it's a movie from 1980, with a newer commentary at the end)

Hmmm...I wonder how many throbe-wearing, hubble-bubble smoking girls there are in the West...I'm guessing none! And yet it's all the West's fault, now that is funny lol.

Is the horrendous amount of makeup the local girls wear the fault of westerners too?

Perhaps Japanese geishas should be blamed for that disturbing trend.

Mandi - its back to the perception that everyone in the 'west' is crazy, debauched etc.

Do these imamms ever tell people usefull stuff like wear their seatbelts?

By diamond• 20 Apr 2009 12:57

Don't worry Alexa, what evens it out is the number of people who think Qataris are a bunch of lazy, stupid idiots with 150 kilos waistlines (I read that on Ql yesterday!). I think we all ought to retreat back to the desert with our camels and leave the West to self-destruct ;)

Ah Alexa, you're just upset cause this means you can't dress in thobe, go down to the Corniche and encourage young Qatari girls to smoke anymore. :P

I don't get it. How does dressing up in a thobe make you more "Western"?

It's amusing to me that these male Imams want to preach (literally) to the women to tell them how to behave like good girls, while at the same time women aren't encouraged to attend the prayers in the Mosque.

Funnier still that the message to be less 'western' will only reach the females through 'western' communication media like newspapers, tv, radio and internet - the very same media that the Imams are condemning.

Delicious irony.

By genesis• 20 Apr 2009 12:37

Yes tallg, it's the west's fault according to the imam in last friday preaching ;)

I think the wording needs a lot to be desired. Perhaps its been translated from an Arabic article.

Now that would be funny Tallg, because way more people smoke here then in the West.

I actually know a girl who used to borrow her brothers thobe in Saudi so she could go driving and to visit her brothers grave in Mecca.

The way the article is worded implies that it's the "smoking cigarettes and hubble-bubble" that is "a sign of the predominance of destructive ideas and values from the West on the minds of the youth in this country", rather than the cross-dressing.

Is the article worded poorly, or are they really saying that women taking up smoking is the West's fault, and nothing to do with all the men who smoke here?

Its all very confusing.. A lady dressed in Thobe wandering the parks... What about the bumpy bits.. surely she stands out?

I recall a couple of cases in Saudi where women dressed up as men in order to drive around, but this is not neccessary here.

Now as far as cross dressing goes.. It hasn't harmed me mentaly in the least... i'm off now to powder my face..

"This is a sign of the predominance of destructive ideas and values from the West"

This makes me sad :(

Look it doens't take a genius to work out that if your a muslim girl and you want to meet up with boys then how u going to do it?

You cant dress as a western women because obviously from moviesd and tv they all sluts etc. ;P

So what is a girl to do but dress up in 'modest' clothing so she can meet boys - its win-win

Well I have to say I would be tempted if I had thought of it. A western woman standing at the bus stop on Rayyan road attracts a great deal of unwelcome behaviour I can tell you! Maybe they just wanted to be annonymous, I know how they feel.

I don't see how they are "aping" Western culture, as cross dressing for women is not overly predominate in the West...unless, like fubar says, you consider women wearing pants as cross dressing.

Oh, baldick, there are guys wearing avayas too. They are clean shaven, plucked eyebrows and also full of make up. They are pretty indeed. :)

I saw that group, and they are happy doing that. :)

Depends if you think girls wearing jeans and t-shirts are 'dressed as boys' or just 'dressed'.

Next thing they'll be preaching against all the guys wearing white dresses.

That was reported before (some sources but it was not published that time), wearing thoube but people were surprised that they are young women. This may be due to suppressed feelings leading to rebellion. But should not put blame on copying other cultures. It depends on their upbringing.
