Kitten at Waqif Souq

Hi QL's
Please can I ask you to comment? Hubby and I went to Waqif Souq yesterday and I saw 2 adorable (what looked like) Persian kittens. The shop owner said they were 3 months old. I felt so sorry from them and wanted to bring one home. When I got told they were 1500 rials, Hubby said "no". The one had a running tummy and I suspected it wasnt well.
Has anyone bought any pets from the Souq? And is 1500 rials a rip off? I dont know what you would pay for a pedigree Persian.
Thank you! I need the imput to convince hubby or your advice not to go back and fetch it.

I got my pure-bred Persian cat from QAWS. She had been abandoned and when I first saw her she looked like something that had been scraped off of someone's shoe but she has grown up to be a gorgeous (and she knows it) cat. One caveat about Persians - they need to be brushed and groomed EVERY day or they get matts in their fur. Not low-maintenance kitties.

It has happened a few times in Doha, the Identichip database is a good way to prove you are the legal owner. I don't blame anyone who is tempted to buy from the pet shops and souq, I can't drive past Animal World, I just want to go in and buy all the parrots. My husband speeds up if we are going past, he is scared I am going to blow all our savings!

Shelly you already know me over a housing issue :)

I am asking because generally Indians give the best price to Indians, but it is a bit tricky sometimes as they have major social order and geographical location issues. I once took an Indian friend to the souq and ended up paying just about as much as I would have if I went alone, then it was explained that they were from rivaling parts of India (weird for me but as good an explanation as any). We then went over to the Silk center and I got some amazing prices due to commraderie.

My husband can sometimes get amazing prices in the souq but he also said it depends on who he deals with. For me, I end up getting the same inflated price no matter what. I will pop on by there this evening and see what kind of price he gives me and keep you posted.

I will do. If it does belong to someone I will return it - then get the police to go and arrest the sod!

shelly - you're right in saying that the cats at QAWS are being fed and cared for, but QAWS is running at full capacity so can't take in any more cats. This means there are lots of strays who have to be left to fend for themselves. If you adopt from QAWS not only will you get a cat who has been properly treated and vaccinated, but you will also be freeing up space for them to take in new cats.

The big problem is that many of them have either been stolen or picked up off the street. Check any cat you buy from the Souq hasn't got a microchip from a previous and grieving owner. If it does the Police will make you give it back and you will lose your money. You can get them scnned for free at the vet clinics.

I think that only pet-lovers are going to be on this thread, I am hijacking it for just a moment, to ask for help from the very same...Any good samaritans out here who can locate 2 large/medium size travel crates for dogs? I am trying to send back the two dogs I rescued to my home country.india.. and am trying to cut back the cost to the minimum..I have chked out the vet places and boy..they are not cheap..I could buy if someone wants to sell, or take them on rent and return them in about 3 months time..in case they have it lying around in storage..I hv put this i the classified, but no luck as yet,and I am running out of time..Sorry if I come off as a beggar, but desperate times, make for desperate measures, am sure someone can help, thank you all.

I saw the kittens too. The white one was simply adorable..

I personaly can't see the harm in buying from the pet store and then getting them properly checked / treated by a vet.

Dont buy from pet stores in Qatar!!! ADOPT!!!

I 1s saw a shop keeper hold a parrot by its neck and press it (more like squash it) against the table while he clipped its fight feathers (more like part of the wing itself)!!! & he was clipping without even holding the wing, while the poor bird was flaping its wing! & wanna kno wat was the worst part... the proud new owner of the bird was leaning over the table smoking a cigaratte.

tsk, tsk...

Thank you all. I appreciate your comments and advice. My heart is still aching, as I feel so sorry for them. I have always been an animal lover and at one stage, back home (SA) I had 6 cats. I have one already, which I got from the BSPCA (Bahrain) and brought her here. Should we ever leave, I would spare no cost in taking them with. To me, they are like children!

My heart is over ruling my head. Although I know I should rather go to the QAWS, those animals are being cared for and fed. Although they need homes. I would take the kitten, not because its "cute and fluffy", but because it is sick and not being cared for or has shelter, as Weasel stated. Those guys are bastards and make money off poor helpless animals!

Does anyone know a local I can take with to bargin for me? Lol......

You guys are GREAT on QL!!!

I saw those adorable kittens there earlier this week. I didn't ask how much they were, but I was very tempted to buy one. I've learned that when you go to Souq Waqif, the price you pay depends on your ethnicity. Westerners will not be able to get as good a deal as non-Westerners. In fact, I took an Asian friend with me one time to do my bidding.

What has happened to me there, and to some of my American comrades is that the shop owner will quote you one price, and by the time all is said and done, they're asking for more money than what they originally told you they would sell you the item(s) for in the first place. That may not be true at all of the shops there, but as I said, I've known the same thing to happen to other people.

Sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you're the bug...

I saw those cute persian kittys a couple of weeks back. There were 4 of them. Were kept in a cage outdoors. I had a chat with the pet shop guys and from what I gauged they don't much about keeping pets.

We bought a kitten last month from a lady advertising at FFC. It's very healty and very well trained, we visited her house and the mother and the father are pure persians. A cat lover, you cant find better .

It's just a bunch of unscrupulous store owners who see that the locals' value whatever is expensive and associated with wealth in the west.

I had a Qatari girlfriend here who once bought a Persian kitten for a few thousand riyals, then proceeded to keep it outdoors (in the Doha heat!!) and feed it table scraps... She only wanted it because it looked "pretty" and "fluffy" and because it cost so much (that, to her, meant that it must be better!).

Don't support stores and individuals who do this. If you desperately want a pure bred animal, wait until you return to your home country and purchase one there from a reputable dealer. Otherwise, like Scarlett said, adopt an animal from QAWS here that needs help.

By purchasing that cat you saw, you'd be helping it for sure, but you're also encouraging the store owner to get more and more cats like this, not tend to their medical conditions or treat them well...and in the end that hurts more cats than the one you'd be helping.

Animal trafficking (like human trafficking) is a profitable business here in Qatar. I can't tell you how many local families I have seen over the years who keep large cats (think lions, tigers, cheetahs, etc.) as pets, have chimpanzees and other large primates -- all for the novelty of saying that they have one. Then as it grows and becomes unmanageable, they lock it up in a cage too small to move around in...sad really. The government needs to do more about animal welfare here.

If you want a kitten, please do not buy from a pet store as there are many that are in need of good homes at QAWS or the local vet's offices. Too many of these babies are left in the street and these kind folks take in as many as possible and find good homes for them.

IF you purchase from the pet store, you are just encouraging the pet shop owner to get MORE kittens to sell and make money from their misfortune to be born a pure breed animal.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.

Generally pet shops in Qatar aren't held in very high regard and the recommendation is not to buy from them.
