height in idiotic driving

The rock
By The rock

Hi

I was driving from Wakra towards the airport signal yesterday morning and the dimwit driver in front of me suddenly applied full breaks.... the reason; he had just spotted a pigeon walking on the road ahead.
The road in front was clear so there was no way i could have predicted it. Needless to say, the passengers in my car were very shaky with the close call and emergency breaks.

Shouldn't they include a common sense test along with the driving test!

well, taking advise from here, i did slow down a bit when i went out today :)

shaz, the pigeon flew away :p and i had thought that's what birds always do.... untill someone pointed out an exception here.

I dont know if I would classify this an an idiotic driver. If you leave enough space between you and the car in front of you there shouldnt be much of a problem.

Also, as QS said it could have been a cat, dog or even a child. We all need to keep this in mind when driving. If everyone was wearing a seatbelt, the kiddies are fastened in, you are paying attention to the road and adhering to the speed limit you should fair out alright.

Defensive driving is extremely important anywhere in the world, Qatar is no different. The indication that someone is breaking is their breaklights :).

Anytime man, Good that you took things in a positive way. I thank you. Drive safe, i completely understand your situation as well.

What I have noticed here people get real annoyed in such cases.

But also remember " Anger is a feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your mind"

britexpat, yes i think traffic here moves fast and i have pretty much adapted to it.

xena, well the comment was made because it wasn't a child .. so you have your answer. it was a pigeon... which can fly away... if drivers start behaving this way, for sure they are putting at risk humans (babies!) in other cars !

Well thanks for sharing that perspective in a nice way IMI. point appreciated.

nevertheless, i would add that level of alertness also includes being alert to the traffic around you and knowing what your action would lead to. Its tough making split second decisions but that's what driving in doha is about. Need to be very alert always and also aware of other cars around you.

I once killed a pigeon with my car. I did all I could to avoid it but it swooped up and was taken out by the aerial. Damn aerial hasn't worked since.

Since we don't live in an Angelic world today, we all are ready for blame game. I always feel an accident can always be avoided. The basic principle is being alert, cautious and calm. I feel Qatar's cat population has gone real up, I see so many cats these days and iam worried what will happen to them when summer is near. Most of them just die dude to heat exhaustion, starvation or run over by cars.

I think its about time we don't treat animals like trash. They also feel pain, they also have feelings, and Xena like you have mentioned if it was a kid? then people will go about cursing and blaming non stop.

I hope nothing of this sort happens. Save a Life, Be it Humans or Animals Trust me you will be good that you did.

We all can contribute a little to the society and that can just be by picking litter when you see around you for a start !

Good Luck Guys !!

a while back where a lady had put on brakes as the car infront of her had stopped for a dog, and then the cruiser behind her hit her from the back for stopping. Someone here made a comment that it was her fault for breaking.... but no, I feel that if there is something live in the road, you should try to avoid it at all costs...

I was wondering if the same comment would have been made if it was a child that the first car had stopped for?

Well according to me a Life is a Life, be it human or be it a pigeon. I have seen several people run over cats right in front of me when they can completely avoid hitting them. Does it make you all feel good seeing a cat, dog or Pigeon smashed to death all over the road. I cant take it, seriously. I have stopped cars in the middle of the main road just to pick up dead, near dead animals from the road.

At the same time, yes i also agree that slamming the breaks without any warning can really cause serious accidents. The driver should be alert all the time. If you see something well ahead of you slow down, use the hazard indicators. An awkward situation can always be avoided, general alertness is highly important on the roads. But its a pity where you will see most of us driving around using Mobile phone, Loud Music, lots of things than can just distract your concentration in normal driving conditions like excessive tinting, lots of soft toys at the rear windshields etc.

Thank God nothing happened to anyone. I would not call this driver idiotic, rather a sensitive person. Not everyone can just drive over animals, a poor creature with no understanding.

Yalla..as i always say ! "Drive Safe, Be Safe & Reach Safe !!"

after living few months in tehran, now i can say that driving in doha is much better than in tehran.

i would have applied full break as well...that's why it is mandatory to keep a distance between cars, and not to overspeed. And what if it was a cat/dog? and what if it was a child? the driver who was behind is an idiotic driver, since he thinks it's ok to push the car in front of him, and since he assumes it is ok not to be alerted any moment on the road..

That's why you need a landcruiser, it's high enough to drive over a pigeon without killing it.

"Maintaining safe distance" is the responsibility of the driver in the back. The front driver can apply a smooth break or sudden break according to the situation in front of him....

The driver behind shall anticipate this situation and shall always maintain the safe distance to stop his/her car on seeing the brake lights of the car on front.

The sad fact is that there are moronic drivers all over the world. Qatar does not have a monopoly on them..

Ick, I had to hit a pigeon once. I felt bad, but I had a speeding Land Cruiser on my rear bumper, so had to choose between the pigeon and me :-(

I could make such a big list on crap driving by the people here, but i can't be bothered. Just get a hummer, and run them off the road.

Oh and pulling the fingers is allways fun.
