Monkey cartoon sparks racial row in US

NEW YORK: A New York Post cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing US President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police
drew outrage Wednesday from civil rights leaders and elected officials who said it echoed racist stereotypes of African-Americans as monkeys.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: ``They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.''

A person is deemed innocent until found guilty, that the American law.

Dont try read between the lines. The cartoonist tried to link a recent shooting incident with shooting down of the bill, thats all.

Its the critics who go about imagining like a layman trying to read modern art, that this and that would be what the cartoonist meant!!

Dont serious citizens of US of A have other serious issues to fight for?

I have seen email forwardings comparing the previous unpopular US presient to a chimpanzee and toys imaging him as ashtray & pen stand. If these were no issues, why the present one? That was my point.

... and I draw the line at equating white men to donkeys (or is it cos it rhymes with honky?), when it is actually only ex presidents that should receive such treatment ;o)

Depicting or mongering monkeys in cartoons is of historical significant, due to the embedded roots of racism against Black Americans and other minorities groups in the USA.

Yet is not the drawing, but the intent behind it!

Enough is enough!

Bijoy...Do you think this is a non issue...?

Must admit that even with my taste for humour, i found it a little troubling..

However, Col Allan, the Post's editor-in-chief, defended the cartoon as "a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy."

That is totally racist and crossing the line of decency!

I hope Sean Delonas finds a comfortable chair inside a court room!

It takes a democracy little time to make news out of a non issue.

A monkey gets killed after mauling a person and critics call it trivalising a beloved monkey's death! Compared to the hate cartoon/toys made of previous President of US of A; the present comparison (if ever meant) to the present President, is a non-issue.
