International Driving Permit - UK

All,

Although you can transfer your UK license over to a Qatari one without taking any test you can also apply for an International Driving Permit in the event the process takes longer than anticipated. At the time of writing it only costs £5.50 from the post office and is valid for 1 year although I believe you can only use it in Qatar for 6 months before you have to transfer.

All you need to do is fill in a small application form obtained from the post office and provide a valid UK driving license including paper counterpart together with your passport for identification and a passport size photo. All done in less than 10 minutes.

Yes, your IDL is valid for 6mons. -> if the authorities are smart, they will verify your rental agreement and that will be the basis of the driving start. For IDL, you are not allowed to drive company or private vehicles, only rentals. Heavy fines will be imposed for the company or persons allowing this.

You can apply for temporary qatar license - TQL (card but red color) until the duration of your Business Visa (BV). When your BV expires, you need to renew the TQL at the same time.

It is a bit costly if you start now. Drive until your IDL 6mos expires then apply.

Hope this help... if any doubt, visit and consult the licensing department in Madinat Khalifa.

I have an UK International Driving Permit.

I have started driving recently and working on a Business visa.

Is the permit valid for 6months? If so how the authorities know when I started using it?

Can I convert to a Qatar Licence when on a business visa?

thanks

got a doubt. SO If one can exchange their UK license for Qatari one, will they still give u back the UK license after they issue the Qatari license. Another doubt is if u have a UK license but with an Indian passport , will they still exchange it

you need to go through the AA or RAC in UK to get an IDP allied to your UK License. This will as previously said, to drive for up to 6 months in Qatar. However some hire companies only allow you to rent for 1 month on an IDP
