Is Slumdog Millionaire playing now?

Mandilulur
By Mandilulur

The Peninsula didn't have a movie section yesterday, the Doha Cinema website is usually wrong, the Gulf-Times article didn't say what day it was opening - does anyone know if Slumdog Millionaire is playing at City Center Cinema today???

But I couldn't get through 10 minutes of it...

I heard so much great things about it....

But I just couldn't stand the police abusing him over and over...Guess I like happy movies...

And now I hear there is a big outcry over the title of the movie...Anyway, if your from that culture I'm sure it makes more sence to you than me...I understand the point of the movie and all...Just got bored

Not slaming the movie just not for me...

i have noticed a few things in the movie.

the movie starts with the word Madarchod if u see the uncensored version of it.

and the best scene was when the two guys are working as waiter in the hotel one of them fills the empty mineral water bottle with tap water and puts superglue to seal it.

worth a watch

" Grim depiction

Slumdog Millionaire is a brilliant British movie. It is technically competent with excellent photography and sound effects. However, I find that Indians and the Indian media are getting inordinately excited about the movie and trumpeting it as great Indian success! This is incorrect.

The film is grim and reflects poorly on the progress that Mumbai and India made during the past 60 years.

The poverty levels in Dharavi are grinding and sub-human. Even animals in zoos of some the Western countries live in better conditions. It is indeed a shame that despite the tall promises over the last many decades, Dharavi continues to be a festering sore. Alternate accommodation to the people who live there, has not been provided by the government

The film portrays starkly the homeless and poor children who are pushed into child prostitution and also blinded, to make them beg. These rackets are shameful to us.

The film also underscores how jealous Indians are of each other. The entire story is about the police torture that Jamal, the protagonist, undergoes, purely because people could not stomach a slum child winning by knowing all the answers in a quiz show! Yes, many Indians are very jealous of the success of their fellow citizens. This would be true of people in most developing countries, where living conditions are harsh.

Movie stars are real idols in India! Young Jamal jumps into a massive pit of human excreta, so that he can race quickly to see Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, to get his autograph.

We need more toilets in India! After seeing the movie I am getting convinced of the BBC and CNN estimates that 700 million Indians do not have latrines attached to their homes. This is wretched and inhuman.

The quality of acting of all the actors, including Anil Kapoor, range from average to below average. The main plot is paramount in the movie, not the role of acting of any particular actor. Good acting came, exclusively from two unknown children, who play the childhood roles of Salim and Jamal.

Slumdog Millionaire is not a film about which Indians or Indian media can be proud of or enthralled with. It is a film, which shows how much Indians have to work, to eliminate poverty, homelessness and crime. That is the central lesson we need to take from this essay on the debauchery prevailing in the slums in India/Asia/Latin America.

slumdog is not expected to be a big hit in the rural areas in India. Wat the majority of the Indian audience look for in a movie is different from the expectations of a western audience. Hence the almost mandotary song and dance routines.

As you say, it's ironic that the ONE film that gains world-wide attention is the one that depicts only the negative. Hmm, I have an observation - could it be because this is the ONE film where the actors don't break into song and dance at every opportunity? (And I really did leave when the credits and dancing began.)

Mandilulur...I guess it was part of the plot...(all the characters)...I am sure Danny had to drop a lot of footage to give the film the effect.....

Its like making a movie in Qatar and showing only the bad aspects like queue jumping, crazy-driving, eve-teasing etc....and then it goes on to become a big hit!

How would a local react?

But ...Slumdog is just one of the 400 films that come out of the factory called "Bollywood" add to it another 400 from rest of India......So a couple of movies among 1,000 movies every year showing the bad side of Mumbia/India is no big deal :)

Jack, I'm not surprised. Everyone in the film except the protagonist was depicted as corrupt, criminal and callous. Everyone! If I were from Mumbai I'd be a little insulted as well. I was a little surprised that the Indian community in the US were so excited by the film. It's not a pretty picture of a society.

There is a lot of anger brewing back home regarding this movie....especially the depction of the slums.

Oh, yes, very much so. It was quite entertaining and visually captivating. The suspense and the love interest was a little contrived but that's OK. It was a fun movie that presented a side of life that we don't get much of a chance to see and probably should be aware of. But it was uplifting and redemptive. Good over evil and all that. But there was a lot of evil in it. Off to bed now, I'm an early bird.

Just back from seeing the movie. We thought it was great except it does show a very negative and dark side of Indian life. But the main character (and love) eventually triumph. Thank God, no singing and dancing, though. That side of Bollywood tends to get on Western nerves a bit. DaRuDe, had I known you wanted to come I would have slipped you into my Chanel bag. And offered you a bite of my Applebee's chocolate cake, yum!

its hindi and english mix, but the main dialogues are in english... wherever its hindi, ther are english subtitles.

its a wonderful movie, but i honestly dont think its good enough for an oscar (the music has a good chance). but this is from someone whos used to bollywood movies, maybe its a totally new thing for the western audience.

its playing in theaters right now, i remember seeing the GT ad yesterday.
