Moving To Qatar from England

Hi Everyone,

I will be moving to Qatar to work on the Shell GTL project and I am looking for good accomodation for me and my Wife. I want to be near to work but also near to a centre. I have been looking at Villas in AL KHOR. Is this place nice and what is there to do there for my wife? I want a 2 or 3 bed villa in a complex with a pool if possible. Can anyone advise on this for me.

Many thanks.

Al Khor, Mesaaid and Dukhan are industrial towns inhabited only by employees of the companies that own the town. Otherwise people live in Doha. There are lots of people who live in Al Khor who use this site, hopefully someone who does will respond.

I just want to give another side to the story. I live in Dukhan, about an hour from Doha. When we first arrived I wished we could live in the centre. Now, after 3 years of being here, I bless my lucky stars I don't live in Doha. Company accomodation is free and well maintained, I may live a little way out but I can go to the beach in 5 minutes, walk my dogs in private and see flamingoes outside. A small community isn't necessarily a bad thing, people pull together and I have never had more friends. There's no traffic, no stress and life is good.

I love it here, I hope you will enjoy Qatar as much as I do, wherever you decide to live. All the best, JJ

Thanks,

My company will provide housing, but as I have not been out there yet I am unsure where I will be. I have seen comments about the RAS Laffan Industrial City and where the workers live, but as I imagine that will be for single guys and not really a family environment??

I was hoping to stay somewhere so my wife will not be bored everyday I am in work. Doha is ideal but I am unsure about a daily commute. Am I right in thinking this will take at least an hour each way if not more.

Any suggestions??

Thanks again.

Your wife can cook and live peacefully. Only 3 Restaurant are there. That to a medium Indian & chineese meals available. ofcourse KFC outlet is there. All other needs you have to go to Doha( 50 Kms Drive). The villa with 3 to 4 rooms kitchen + a living room in a compound ,independent, will cost you for rent in a month QR 12000/-(1 Us dollar=3.64 QR).Enough place for gardening in side villa will be available. I am also working inside Raslaffan near Pearl GTL Project.

For more details call 00974 4720185 GMT 1400 to 1900 hrs.

Does your employer not offer housing? Al Khor is a nice place, but it's a "company town." If you are not in the Al Khor (Rasgas) community it could be lonely and isolated for your wife. It's about 45 minutes from Doha, so it's kind of far for a daily commute for coffee, the gym, etc.
