Setting up my wifi network

I would appreciate any help you can give with this problem, we've pushed paper clips into holes that say 'restore' we have been on http://192...etc and still no joy - when we type in the 192.168 number we get the gateway page, not the wireless page. We have tried the number give on the netgear installation guide - 192.168.0.227 but that goes nowhere.
As neither myself or Dave are techies - here is a blow by blow account of what we have:

1 - broadband ADSL box supplied by Qtel
2 - Netgear DSL Modem Internet Gateway DG814
3 - Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Access point WG602 v2

and an array of various wires

Is there anyone who can in give a very simple guide to which wire to plug where - which IP address to type in...

Or do we through the lot in the air and buy something new or can you recommend a cheap local techie who can come round and do the job!
