Traffic Jams

Hi,

What do you think of the traffic jam in Doha?

what are the possible best solutions to this issue?

any developed and flourishing city encounters problems connected to traffic and traffic organization. recently, UAE's authorities decided to restrict the issue of driving licenses to a certain category of applicants, those who do not hold university degree.

do you think this is a good remedy to traffic congestion?

i think this is part of the solution, but there should be more measures to be taken like maintenance and enlargement of roads, urban development side, and people's awareness.

i am very impressed by the idea of using bicycle as a means of transportation in the city, it denotes ecological awareness of the users and it is environment friendly means of transportation.

lets think of more ways to ease our life's challenges if any exists.

thanks

Public Transport....sea front

In fact any kind of Public Transport is good.

Qatar should not ignore the Sea as a means of transport (using high speed motors)especially since fuel is cheap.

They are starting mass transit but it is not like in the west. I for one would never use it here (call me a snob) but use it all the time back home. The majority of cars in Qatar are not owned by the same people who use the bus and such. The mentality here is not the same.

and for mass transit, the succesfull solution uptil now in the world is underground train system...lets hope may qatar adopt it..

Mass transit. It is the only way. They could not build enough road to ease traffic jams. Where would they put them?

They tried limiting licenses a wile back, but get this, they wanted to stop issuing them to women and labour class. Needless to say that didnt work. My friends have been telling me (ladies) that they have all taken the driving test at least 4 times before they pass. I think it is a ploy to keep them in the driving schools.

Anyone think that toll roads might help? I would be all for paying for a toll highway if I wasnt stuck in traffic most of the day.

Coming to work this morning, there was an accident between two cars a few cars ahead of me. Our lane came to a halt.

Suddenly moron behind started honking their horns and flashing lights.

All it needs is a little patience and civility to keep traffic flowing..

As said previously I have misgivings about the underground element of things.

It depends on what kind of subterranean rock it is here. Look at London, you will notice very few lines are south of the river because that is softer rock than north of the river.

Not a geologist, but expressing a view as I am a nerd when it comes to undergound railways, especially the Tube... :-)

It lessens the risk of heart problems, both in health, the wallet, and the police coming at ya.

Well our grandmas and grandpas used to walk to their schools a mile away and they don't complain. When we got a vehicle around recently in the modern times, we always complain and we blame the vehicles for the 'misconduct'.

See the logic of it?

1. Stop the present wide-bodied Karwa buses inside City limits.

2. Introduce around 1,000 Smaller buses (both in length and width) to ply inside City limits.

If 1,000 small buses are introduced the present Karwa taxis should suffice. But the Taxi Fare should be QR 1 per Km travelled.

If taxis and buses are easily available at least the middle class people will not need to buy Car/s. This will mean they will end up sending more money home. Thus Good for Qatar and good for the Expats.

Heavy goods like Trailer boxes, Vechiles, Big Iron pipes etc make more sense being transported by Rail.

But you see the disruption on D Ring Road? Imagine that on the main roads.

Also I don't think the foundations could ever be so deep. After all we are still an oasis on desertlands!!

The craziness of the drivers here leaves a lot to be desired. Okay, I am not the world's most perfect driver, but when I see drivers cross the line to go over the other side of the road to avoid speed bumps, with oncoming traffic, insane doesn't describe it.

I think the driving tests must be more stringent, and to get my UK licence exchanged, all I had to do was sit an eye test, which was reading 6 letters on the wall from about 10ft away.

Don't initiate University qualifications into it, because if it was that way, I wouldn't have my licence and I wouldn't be able to see clients and then therefore my job would be redundant.

Restricting trucks over a certain weight between 6am and 8pm - although I'm sure this rule is already in place in parts of Qatar but is it enforced?

Like so many traffic laws here, ignoring them until you get the bill from the MOI seems to be the norm. If there were enough police manpower to stop offenders, issue fines on the spot then I believe that many poor drivers (speeders, drifters, dangerous lane changes, driving on the hard shoulder, I could go on and on) would stop offending.

In Dubai, once the police were posted on the Dubai Sharjah Road to immediately stop and ticket hard shoulder drivers - it stopped happening.

Here in the Gulf, people speed past the police vehicles with impunity because they know they won't be stopped. In North America and Europe and Australia - when you see a police car, you slow down.

I agree with limiting the number of licenses issued, but this should be coupled with a more stringent driving test, rather than picking on a particular race nationality or education level, and in so doing they will need to improve the public transport to suit.
