I just read through all those comments about how you should never by the puppies from pet shops, and yes I understand that but seeing as they are so badly treated there shouldn't someone get them out? Shouldn't someone buy them and bring it home to a loving environment instead of leaving it there to die? I understand by adopting a dog from QAWS mostly guarantee's you a healthier dog but they're being well cared for while the dogs in the pet shops are being cruelly kept and most likely dying. Why is that fair?

I have a chocolate Lab that I bought in a pet shop, I chose him because he was the saddest looking puppy in the shop. He turned out great, and he is one lucky dog. Why should the dogs rescued from the street get more chance's of life than those in a pet shop?

QAWS animals are not free as the new owner would need to cover the costs of the vets bill for vaccinations and neutering.

All the advice about reputable breeders is great - but is not valid in Qatar where there are no animal laws or regulations and the majority (not all) of breeders do it purely for money and will constantly interbreed their animals. There are so many problems with the health and personality of these 'purebreds' that you are probably better off getting a mixed breed from QAWS.

Whatever you do - please do not be tempted to buy from a pet shop - the puppies there may look cute but all have health problems, some of which can be serious or transerable to humans.

If you are seriously looking for a family pet then please come dowm to the QAWS shelter. We currently have 2 GSD mixes (Both 95% pure!!) who are fantastic dogs and are ready to find new families. All our dogs are vaccinated and come with a clean bill of health!!

* And for the record - no breed is standardized. I have a purebred husky and he is quite possibly the laziest dog I have EVER come across and doesn't even bother to play with the other 5 at home! *

There are good breeders out there, there are ways of telling if you are buying a pup from a backyard breeder ie those who breed just purely for money, and then there are good breeders, who breed because of their love for the breed, now, first, see if they give you a good written guarantee, second, check the prices for that breed, if you are getting a purebred dog for very cheap, chances are its a bad breeder, third if they refuse to show you the parents and their pedigree,I have 3 dogs(all were well priced with award winning pedigrees), one dobe and 2 GSDs, and all of them came with a 5 year written gurantee on their health, for congenital defects, for instance, GSDs are known for hip problems, my dogs are guranteed to be hip problem free, which is a congenital defect, my dobe, had a small minor problem, it has a detained testicle(which is not a major problem, could be fixed by a simple surgery), i talked to the breeder, and they were willing to replace my pup, but i am attached to that dog, so i didnt give it back, but the breeder still agreed to give me another dobe, whenever i want, that is a good breeder, as far as the dogs personality goes, they addapt to their owners, so if you are aggressive towards your dog, it will turn aggressive eventually, if you are lazy, your dog will just eat, sit around and get lazy,(unless its a husky, those are bred to run for 20-30 miles at a time) and its a fact, mutts are more unpredictable when it comes to personality, another thing, every dog needs some level of excersize, so if you keep your dog tied up all the time, it will get destructive when they are open, just teach em fetch, you just throw a ball, and the dogs run around, again, dogs are smart animals, so if your dog is aggressive towards you, its your fault, but if the dog is aggressive towards others, then its just being protective(its a trait seen in domninant dogs), you are the leader, you just always have to show them. as far as german shepherd being work dogs, yes they are work dogs, but they were bred for 2 reasons: 1 guard dogs 2: sheep herding, they were just meant to sit around, keep an eye on sheep, and make sure the sheep dont get attacked by predetor, so even then, they didnt run much, in reality, GSDs are very calm, its not the dogs that are the problem, its the owners. if you think you will be a good owner, then your dog will forever be loyal to you. after all, theres a reason they call em mans best friend.

With regards to the debate of pure vs cross breeds...you will find within pure breeds the whole range of 'personalities' like aggressive, strong, shy, submissive etc. Just bec you have a pure breed does not mean you have that exact personality that was written in a book. labs are a classic for that, some are lazy as anything while others are hyper. Most of the people here are saying to avoid pure breeds as most breeders, and I mean nearly all are reputed NOT to have good breeding standards and will breed without regards for genetic disorders. And yes mutts CAN have genetic disorders but they are not as common as pure breeds as due to dominant genes etc. My suggestion would be to find a dog that you connect with, as in can you walk a dog every day or maybe even twice a day, as a GSD would need or is your lifestyle more suited to a dog that needs less activity. GSD are working dogs, pls do not just go for looks

Also be aware that to take your dog back to the UK from Qatar would require it to go into 6 months quarantine in the UK.

i'll be blunt here

the pet shop owners/workers steal pedigree dogs from houses or get the stray from salwa (industrial area) and sell these dogs.

u are better off goin to Qaws and getting a pet.and will be doin society and the animal a huge favor.

Get a dog from QAWS. www.qaws.com

Pure breeds are more prone to "problems" than mixed-breeds because the weaknesses in their particular breed are magnified many times over. Think of it like incest in humans.

i dont know where to get a german shepherd pup, but the person above whos suggesting you not to buy a purebred doesnt know what shes talking about. I used to breed GSDs in the US, and let me tell you, getting a mix breed dog is more dangerous as you wouldnt know what to expect, since they have 2 different mentalities from different breeds, for instance, having a pup whos crossed between a GSD and a rottie, would be very unpredictable, which is potentially dangerous, as far as health problems are concerned, get a pup which comes under a breeder gurantee for the any congenital defects. people who are bad breeders will not care about the health of the dogs and will just breed for money, which leads to over breeding, in which a defect could be ignored, and will carry out in the pups. so if you get your dog from a good breeder, they will most likely not have problems. and FYI, "bastard" dogs AKA mutts have more chances of genetic defects as you dont really know their pedigree.good luck finding a pup tho, if you want one, i can get you one from the states from a show dog quality pedigree, but then again that would cost you some money, i used to sell my pups for $1500 in the states, if you want to import one, it would cost you around $3000, and it would come either this summer or after summer, since we recently just sold our last litter, and we only have one breeding pair, which my brother is taking care of in the states. If you want one, and are willing to wait and pay, just let me know, but im gonna have to make sure that you will take good care of it, and have a proper set up for it for summers, since they do have thick coats, and could die from the heat.

If you go to the Qatar Living Groups and get onto the animal & pet group this will give you the link to QAWS who have a website for rescued animals, puppies included. Also you will find info about buying pets here as well as the disasterous treatment animals receive in petshops ad why you should not go there.

Adopt a stray instead.

FYI I used to have a lot of dogs when I lived abroad and learned that pure bred animals have a lot more problems, medically & mentally than bastards. I recommend you do not get pure breed.
