Life is cheap...

Eleven workers in Bahrain had a miraculous escape when an elevator they were asked to test in a newly constructed building fell 45 floors to the ground. "The men were ordered to enter the elevator to be human weights to check if the elevator would hold their weight," the Gulf Daily News quoted sources as saying. "Though they protested, it fell on deaf ears."

are Asians (Nepali, Indians, etc), obviously the supervisors or whoever want/made them ride that friggin elevator thought that the workers are 'dispensable' and easily replaced. Or worst, the workers' lives were considered irrelevant and just part of the statistics.

Since the incident happened in Bahrain, I hate to assume what the nationalities of these supervisors coz it would make a person's blood boil for the indifference these supervisors' behavior towards the workers....

Sacks filled with sand are more expensive. The management was very efficient using the already available resources.

Agree.. My point was that the sacking should be the starting point..

Britexpat - "They should be sacked and made an example of."

You're kidding right. Even in a so called "third world" country like India, they will be jailed for something like this. Not just sacked.

Well the test was for normal operations (i.e. the wires, motors, control systems etc), not the brakes.

But still, I agree this isnt the right way. Though I wouldnt think anyone can actually die during a test. Who knows!

Obviously, they had no idea if the brakes were working or not because they made the men "test" it out. Point is, no one cared if they lived or not.

Why "miraculous" escape?? I though elevators are fitted with centrifugal brakes anyway, which are a line of defence if the wires were to part.

Infact theres no way they would have survived a free fall of 45 story's.....the centrifugal brakes must have acted anyway.

the workers who were "ordered" to go that elevator are asians, what's the "nationality" of those supervisors?

Just asking...

I don't understand what your comment has to do with this story..

The fact is that someme idiot incharge had the notion of testing the elevator with humans, when he could have used other methods.. The management should be sacked..

Now I know how they come up with that "Max Capacity" number inside elevators.

Those workers are not ignorant (as they protested) but they had no choice as they'd need to keep their jobs. Sad when employers / supervisors put workers in harm's way. Test weight - put sandbags or something with the same weight. Just taking short cuts, without consideration.

Counter-argument - "See? The workers escaped alive so the elevators were well built to withstand the impact"

- Unacceptable and irresponsible!
