Bosses 'should embrace Facebook'

mjamille28
By mjamille28

Companies should not dismiss staff who use social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo at work as merely time-wasters, a Demos study suggests.

Attempts to control employees' use of such software could damage firms in the long run by limiting the way staff communicate, the think tank said.

Social networking can encourage employees to build relationships with colleagues across a firm, it added.

However, businesses are warned to be strict with those who abuse access.

Sometimes employees just need a quick mental break. we're not robots. and facebook etc are great for that...

but i personally find myself spending MORE time on them when I'm not supposed to be- the whole allure of the forbidden I guess haha........

There's a button to delete all of them in one go :o)

BTW, one of my QC guys spent all day yesterday on Y Messenger. At least it looked that way as he was on it every time I walked past his desk. This despite our corporate policy of no chat except lunch time.

Did you Google it first?

I've used facebook for work, actually. It's a great way to keep up with what's going on, and it drove me nuts at my last job that they didn't trust our dedication to our work enough NOT to waste excessive amounts of time.

Basically I think all this hoop-la about blocking sites and monitoring employees web traffic is infantalizing- and treat your employees like children, they'll act like children.

I've seen many people wasting 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours of their 8 hours shift browsing those. If you will do that at work, then what did you left for yourself later at home?

That is why, we do block those whenever we will go [Facebook, Friendster, Meebo, Orkut, etc ...] not to mention all messengers and web based mails too.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment. (Gautama Buddha)

"friend finder" or "people you may know" tool

which will automatically search for your colleagues.
