Tips on finding a live in?

Expat Sueño
By Expat Sueño

We're looking for a live-in and don't really know where to start.

I've put the word out through our employer's "social club", but haven't had any good leads yet. The best person is obviously one with known references or from someone who is leaving Qatar, but those people seem to go off the market before they really hit the market.

I just put an ad in the QL Classifieds as well.

Any tips. . .agencies? Know anyone? Anything?

Thanks,

Expat Sueño

Eve, as far as i know if you get the maid through an agency they only 'want to know you' for the first 3 mth. After that you are on your own if something goes wrong with the maid.

By Eve• 25 Oct 2008 00:29
Eve

Last Filipino I brought a relative of a women here turned out to be a thief so we had to pay to send her home. Plus a friend just had a maid who after a month of being with the family was found to have TB, so she is on a plane home and they pay for it. At least with an agency they have to pay for the ticket or at least thats the way it used to be! I wish they would do TB testing before coming, usually its seems the medicals they do in their home countries are not reliable.

DMS... why didnt you directly attack Salax then? I am reading the posts also and I think you attacked Suenos english and questioned whether she was telling the truth about her nationality all due to your lack of understanding?

BTW, putting "no offense intended" does not make the comment any less offensive in nature.

how about this...

Lift in UK English is Elevator to US English.

Cupboard to UK is cabinet to US..

so which is wrong or correct??

Live-in to Us means HouseMAid.

Live-in to Phils means Common-law-partner.

...and somebody says a grammar is wrong! on whose english is it wrong??

Now this made me laugh!!

implying to be correct in the midst of ignorance!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

ok so others here agreed that there is nothing wrong with ES' English....then, when i seconded in agreement, somebody got a problem with it? "are you really an American (I could not understand your english grammar, no offense intended)"...you really shouldn't have said this one to ES...it was totally uncalled for,...that was why i agreed with NFH...

for the nth time i say, i personally think that ES grammar is fine...salax just happened to put the comment just before i got the chance to...i was actually addressing ES,...why does this has to come back to that silly graphic issue, im over that one already,... to be quite frank, i really dont care what others think of my graphics...

By anonymous• 19 Oct 2008 13:32

ES never mentioned the word nanny or maid (look at my first post, I wrote without ES first comment). Anyhow, I am not picking on MJ, believe me. But if you study all the posting she had after that "graphic issue", you would understand me so I say again, I am at peace with MJ, I just don't know the other way around. You don't know the story so you don't understand my reaction.

MJ, sorry if you think I am offending you, but the grammar thing came from me, so when Salax reacted and you seconded it, you are talking about me, that is what I "misunderstood" at getting too personal. Well, if it's not, sorry.

not in the FILEXPAT group sub-forum.

ERGO, most of the readers are NON-FILIPINO and FYI, the word "live-in" was used way back the 80's and very much passe...

And you're in Qatar not in the Philippines and most of the QL folks don't know what "live-in" means to the FILIPINOs...until you "explained" it.

I don't know what beef you got with JM (and i don't care) but isn't it "ungentlemanly" to "pick" on her????

By anonymous• 19 Oct 2008 13:06
anonymous

so no question about it. But the terminology "live-in" maybe common in America as nanny or maid but not to us. As I say, I ask for specific because "it sound" as live-in "partner". As I said, I respect your interpretation but do respect mine. Do you want to have a survey of people understanding certain terminology? You maybe right, maybe we are minority and you are majority? SORRY, I just came from a third world country!

I am not hitting MJ as you think. Mine is objective, if I misunderstood her, sorry, but many people like her also misunderstood me. You have to read between the lines, Azi, before coming into picture.

I dealt with MJ as respectful as I could but she started the nasty word "back off". Ask her the history. Mine was a request, but she saw it differently (and yet she obliged that is why I thank her for that). I don't go personal here in the forum, I use the PM, but again, ask her why I'm using the forum this time.

Live-in means just what it says a maid or nanny who will live with the family, it is a normal terminology when looking for for a maid.

My own opinion when reading your posts is that you are not too sound in the English language yourself.

I asked for specifics. If ever I question the grammar, no offense intent. I want to understand the context of the thread. You have your own understanding, am I not entitled to mine? The first reaction was same as mine, why deal with a fraction of my statement?

BTW, accusing and asking are different things. I am not accusing Sueno, I am asking for specific, same as Greentea. Why can't you understand that putting the phrase, no offense, meant that the preceeding statement has no bad intention meant?

unless you already have a visa for a domestic helper, you need to get a letter from your husband's sponsor with is salary details, upply to immigration for a permit and specify the nationality you want.

Once you have the visa approval, you go to the agency, browse through the CVs they have, pick one, hand them the approval document, copies of passport of your husband ...etc, pay the fee and they take care of the rest

Nothing is guranteed in terms of quality of CVs, so do not put much hope on that, if you are lucky you will get some one serious who would like to work

You may get lucky and find one already here and returned by her sponsor for some reason, you can take her on loan, try her and if she is good transfer her sponsor .. but again nothing guranteed

Good luck

Not unless there is Philippine English?

Haaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaahahah.

Dmigty, you said it yourself. In the Philippines, the term has a different meaning. This is an internet forum, don't go accusing people that their grammar or word usage is wrong. We all come from different backgrounds and terms MAY vary in meaning from where you come from.

What I find funny is, you're not even American, your grammar is not good. Quite elementary, if you're to ask me and here you are telling people off just because of the way they write!

By mjamille28• 19 Oct 2008 12:18
mjamille28

of course it didnt have anything to do with you! like i said, i personally think there is nothing wrong with ES' English...

By anonymous• 19 Oct 2008 12:17

Umm, because the American way IS English!!!!!!! LOL

By anonymous• 19 Oct 2008 12:15

in the philippine, it can be interpreted as live-in "partner" as it is commonly used. And I think the original post was not really that clear. Well, sorry if I misunderstood it as I am not an American and this is an international forum and many nationalities are enjoying in the discussions. Many are offended when a Filipino write in the native language, so its the same thing here, why write the american way (as we are not familiar with?). And I am inquiring and even said, no offense intended. And MJ, I would presume that since salax is reacting on my post, it doesn't have to do with me?

And janey2, are you referring to me as irritating? if I misunderstood, no offense intended.

how the hell did i get personal back there? i just agreed with salax's comment because i personally dont see anything wrong with the way ES spoke.... just coz you're irritated with my graphics doesn't mean that i am getting personal, coz i ain't.. personally, i couldn't really care what you think about my graphics so back off!

dmigty, just to clarify...in American English, when someone refers to a live-in, the "maid/nanny" part is understood. Nothing wrong with ES's grammar.
