I know you posted your information a long time ago but I was wondering if you may be able to help me. My husband and I are British and wanting to adopt a child from Africa. We are obviously living in Qatar and understand that we need a local adoption agency here that can deal with the international adoption agency overseas and a social worker of child welfare officer to carry out a home syudy with us. It sounds like you have gone through that process here and I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction.

I have looked into this too.

You can adopt from a foreign country under that country's legal system. The second part of the process is to have the adoption recognized by your home country, this is where it gets tricky, each country has it's own rules.

E.G. Must be resident in the home country for at least a year

or the number of home visits etc.

speak to the adoption board of your home country to find out.

As a single person Rebecca - it may be difficult for you to adopt while actually residing in Qatar. By that I mean the Qatari authorities may refuse to issue a visa/residency permit for the child.

I know of one person in UAE who was also single, had adopted a child before coming to the UAE and she had to move mountains to get the authorities to recognize/understand that this was "her" child.

Yes, my best friend had adopted a child from India. You need to approach the adoption agency of that country and speak with them. Qatar has no problems with this and they are really good with adoption. There is no problem in adding that child to your visa.

I'm a single Australian/American who is moving to Qatar within the next two weeks (waiting for travel itinerary). I want to adopt while I'm living in Qatar, possibly from Nepal but I don't want to start the process until I've been over there for at least a year.

I'm curious how the process works for an expat.

Be careful on what info you get from people who have done it... Lots of things changed as of April of this year. There are many more hoops to jump through now. Still waiting for the US embassy to call me back... I suspect they are just as helpful as the British Embassy...

have adopted while living here in Qatar. But not Qatari children. The children have been from Lebanon, China, US, and Ukraine.

Qatari kids never go to the orphanage here, there is an authority that oversees adoption, as well as a proper orphanage but adoption of these kids is not permitted to expats.

First stop, check with your embassy and make sure they allow their citizens to adopt while living abroad and from what countries you can legally adopt. From what I have read, you cannot adopt Qatari kids.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Qatar does not have a Central Authority that oversees adoptions. That may or may not be a problem for an expat wanting to adopt. I'm trying to find out.

You are right Shazbat only Qataris can adopt from a local orphanage, and there is really no such thing as adoption here in Qatar. A Qatari family can look after these children for any given period of time but they never "legally" own them, so if the parents come looking for the child (rarely happens) they must give the child back if the parents are fit.

If you are looking to adopt why not try China? A lot of little girls there needing good parents.

I think that only Qatari's can adopt here, but maybe someone else on QL can help with more information?
