Palin wins over Obama women

britexpat
By britexpat

I find this very strange.. How can she "win over" voters, when both parties have divergent policies???

Jessica Goral had pretty much made up her mind two weeks ago: she was going to vote for Barack Obama. Then John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running-mate.

“She empowers a lot of women,” said Mrs Goral, a mother of two in Macomb County – a national bellwether in the battleground state of Michigan and an area rich in white, working-class swing voters who will play an important role in deciding the election in November.

“I like that she’s a brand new mother, and that she has the courage to stand behind her pregnant daughter. She relates to working women. For all of us who have children at home but have to go to work every day – she has given us a sense that we can still do it and can be an excellent mum,” she said. “Sarah Palin is a role model. She’s made me more likely to vote Republican.”

If Mr Obama should be in any doubt how gravely the vice-presidential nomination of the Governor of Alaska has imperilled his White House ambitions, then a day spent in Macomb County will make this clear: white women who voted for John Kerry in 2004 are suddenly deserting the Democratic Party.

This is Mount Clemens, in the heart of Macomb County, where the pollster Stan Greenberg first identified the phenomenon of the Reagan Democrats – the working-class, socially conservative, traditionally Democratic whites who deserted the party for Ronald Reagan in 1980. It is fair to say that this critical swing group now has a new name: Palin Democrats.

The Times spoke to dozens of women here – perhaps the key demographic in this election – in an area that is 88 per cent white, has one of the highest unemployment and home repossession rates in the country, and will play a big role in determining who wins Michigan in November. It is a crucial swing state that no Republican has won since 1988 but where Mr Obama is particularly vulnerable. Nearly all said that they were still undecided. Yet the disturbing fact for Mr Obama was how many said that they had been leaning towards him – until Mrs Palin entered the race. It lends new credence to a poll last week that showed white women fleeing from Mr Obama to Mr McCain.

Katherine Herman, 45, is a lifelong Democrat who has never voted for a Republican. Until now. “I have a friend who’s a Democrat, and like me, it’s Sarah Palin that’s caused her to lean in favour of McCain. Palin is tenacious. She’s sure of herself and would make good decisions for all Americans,” she said.

But QT that is exactly what we have today in our modern day 'democracys'...

Because of idiots voting and putting the likes of Ronald Reagan and the Bush family into office... We have a situation where people are in positions that they can do what they want as long as they have the money or power to pay a good lawyer or grease the wheels of justice and government to receive a pardon.

Voting is not a right... it should be a privilage of the people who truly understand the candidates and issues...

As for educating the morons... Can you really teach a person to understand the consequences of his idiocy? Especially is a 'me' society like we have in the west today?

Although sometimes I think I'd like to see it happen, I genuinely don't think a small group of people should have more rights than others just because they are more intelligent!

These people should try to lead and educate the rest, not control!

But I know people younger than 18 who are more informed about candidates and issues than 90% of adults!!

If you are found guilty of a felony in USA you cannot vote in federal elections. If you are found guilty of a misdemeanor then you can still vote.

Puerto Ricans can vote but it doesn't count towards a finally tally... Same with residents of Washington DC...

I was 17 years old serving in the American military but I could not drink nor vote.... Preventing morons from voting can be done quite easily...

Very easily Brit....

Being eligible to vote is already limited in many circumstances as it stands now, right?

I believe it is imperative for these 'democracies' to survive to limit who can vote. When you have morons voting for people who have thrown the constitution and bill or rights behind there back it tells me the system is broken.

It would be quite easy to do in reality Brit...

MagicDragon... IQ test for everybody would be costly

But IQ test for a few Candidates would not be such a logistics problem.

At least the rotten eggs would be weeded out.

Democracy is designed by default to elect the moron of the two. As Intelligent people are few and less intelligent are more ....so as in a democracy the majority wins...the majority is the less intelligent people.

So the majority would like to have a person in office who resembles them....lol

jack, I think voters should pass an IQ test before they are allowed to go to an election! (I think such a thing used to exist in the US for Black People). It's a shame that they have abandoned it.

Well Jack, I am not speaking about the candidates... I am not mad at GWB for running for office.

But I am incensed that Americans voted for him 2x... That tells me the average American should not be able to vote....

Now one can make an argument for stolen elections and perhaps they bare merit. But an election can only be stolen by tipping. It is too difficult and dangerous to rig an election that is a landslide...

Brit, MD, PM& Oryx...I myself know a few active old people.

There was one guy age 74 who used to travel daily for work in Mumbai(India) Local Train (Dhaisar to Churchgate) at peak hours. It was an effort for me to get into the Train and hold myself steady.....Ok people used to try to give him space and even let him have a seat.

I asked him why he went through hell every day when he could sit at home and watch TV (He was well off). He replied "what to do sitting at home, and get bored?"

Personally I feel people beyond Age 50 should not be elligible to run for Office or for any post for Public Service.

At age 50 there is hardly any energy left in them to do any fruitful work.

At 50 life is downhill for them what do we expect them to give us when they have no ambition, no creative intrest, no health, even their brains are growing weak!

At Ag 60 when he is not fit to work in any government office in the world he becomes fit to become head of the Country...I dont understand this logic!!!!

Dont believe everything the media tells you..

The media was saying Hillary had the upper hand.....till the very end.

Now they are telling that McCain has the upper hand because of Palin.

Right through the campaign Obama has come out as a person with Character & Integrity and these are the qualities everybody would like to have in their leaders.

Women are more attracted to people with Character & Integrity especially during electing someone to office.

Do these people ever read the news? No, they don't. But they do read the "news" - FOX, and that's it.

FOX puts their spin on it, and propagates the lies, and because so many people on the right think that anyone who reports anything different to FOX is part of the liberal media conspiracy, they don't pay it any attention. That's why so many years later, many Americans still believe Saddam had links with Al Qaeda, or Saddam had WMD, or Obama is a muslim, or whatever.
