I have never owned, one but driven a couple, and they drive okay, ie much like the Japanese cars, they must be good value as they're among the highest growth wise in the world in the past 5 years.
Also very cheap to run and cheap to buy the smaller models, Accent, Getz, so if you need a cheap reliable car, then I would say go and try them..
Hyundai vehicles nowadays are good in terms of quality (see JD Powers survey). I owned one(2005 not santa fe) and did not give me any headache(120k mileage). Lets put it this way, if your planning to keep the car for 7 or more years, go for it. If not, then buy another brand only because of the resale value.
It's still depends on you and how you will use it. My advice is to request for a test drive.
I have not driven Santa Fe but I have owned and driven two Hyundai vehicles Galloper and Terracan. Both were excellent vehicles with sound and reliable engines. I bought both second hand so resale was not a major issue since major chunk of money was lost by the first owner while selling.
