Since 1998 I am living in alkhor. Its changed a lot from then. Now the rent is almost same or little higher than Doha. You have enough stores, primary health centre, money exchanges, restaurants etc, but bit difficult for those who has school going children. There is no schools for non arab. you have to send your kids to Doha for school...
A corniche is there, but not so beautiful as Doha. Still you can spend evenings over there.
A fish market is available where you can buy fresh fish.
I am living in Alkhore, but the rents in alkhore are more than that of Doha as the Industrial city is at a distance of 25KM from Alkhore and the families luv to stay here.
The biggest shoping mall LULU is under constrcution and it will be the largest shopping mall of the Qatar.

I lived in Al Khor for around 6 months, it has most things that you need, for family life, however not a lot to do as there is a lack of things like play grounds, parks (except the Corniche), cinemas, specialty stores.
It is cheaper to live there, because of the high proportion of expat workers, from Asian locations, which is great for the budget, a bit dull and dingy looking, nothing like the DOHA skyline and facilities, has a friendly atmosphere from most of the locals..
it's the same as doha...except there's no mall yet. the biggest they have is a shopping center, which is the same size as lulu center. living condition is the same, since it's still part of Qatar. Vehicle is a must, since no public transport/taxi except bus route of Doha-Al khor-doha. If you can live with "unregistered transport", there are a couple, but mostly found only on the main road.
