Villagio security, Racist to their own kind..

thexonic
By thexonic

A few weeks ago 2 colleagues (guys) of my friend went to villagio, they were walking behind a Filipino dude. At the gate there was an Indian and a Filipino security guard. So as the Filipino guy entered the gate, the "Filipino" security stopped him and said "sir you cannot enter" the guy was like why not?, the security said: cuz we are trying to reduce the crowd in the mall. The guy was arguing while the colleagues went in, without anyone stopping them. On the way out, they spotted the same thing... but this time it was an Indian guy who tried to enter the mall and was stopped by the Indian security, for the same reason. The colleagues r new in Doha and they lived in various parts of the world, they were shocked to see such behavior, discrimination and racism of the security guards against their own people...

RP, I so wanted to make a scene at Villaggio last Saturday but I didn't get the chance. Hubby went to the car to drop something off and I waited inside. He wasn't too well dressed (wearing a really old t-shirt, jeans and slippers. We were hoping they'd stop him from coming back in, and if they had done so I would have caused such a scene. But then... They let him in! And spoiled all the fun for me :/

As others said, do not blame the security guards, they are only doing what they are told to do.

Regretfully, they do seem to stop mainly Asian males. Regretfully again, it is not due to reaching their capacity. Villagio are not safety minded in the least. I believe they have two reasons for carrying out the same (not that I agree with throwing people in a bucket so to speak).

1. Assuming that the men they are rejecting entry are not going to spend money but walk around.

2. Assuming that too many bachelors considered to be "junior staff" is not desirable for their mall ambience and lady patrons.....

Again, one should avoid such stereo type systems, but we all endure it from time to time...and might even have done the same too out of frustration or for other reasons.

Personally, I believe that any mall has the right to prevent bachelors from entering if they have a family day. Although I can imagine it being a pain in the neck for men...if that is the system within this society, then so be it.... No family day formally noted should mean that everyone should be permitted access and only removed if he/she has caused an issue of some sort.

Lack of grocery shops is the main reason for Malls getting crowded in Qatar. In Kuwait every residential street has a grocery shop. In Dubai every apartment building has one. But in Qatar, no grocery shops for miles together, even in residential areas.

I always wonder why this problem in Qatar ? Even to buy milk or water we have to drive in congested traffic, and get stuck sometimes. Wow - that answers another question. Why there is so much traffic congestion in Qatar.

Charan,

Here people are sharing their views or opinions on discriminiation, I believe. If they introduce a new day called Mallu Day, how would you be benefitting out of this ?

Dear, its a good topic they are discussing here for the sake of humanity. You must appreciate the efforts of those QLs defending the rights of those who were banned entry in a prestigious shopping mall in the state of Qatar.

Best wishes to all!

they do have a "capacitance" limit at many venues in the U.S.and other contries for safety reasons. They also have "women" only nights at bars and clubs although maybe not for the same reasons. It happens in a lot of places and it is the same thing in the end ie someone is being "discriminated" against, at least in their opinion.

It was not that long ago when women were not allowed in many, many places in the U.S. or had to use a separate entrance (sound familiar?) "people of color" were also treated the same way and is some staes still are. It took hundreds of years to almost get equality and everyone here wants it to happen overnight. Give the Qatari people a break and let them handle their own affairs.

By GodFather.• 12 Jul 2008 14:26
GodFather.

This kind of discrimination is part and parcel of living here. People who come here especially from the poorer countries face this in part of the lives here, either at work, or when going out.

But you have to understand that if the shopping Malls did not impose this kind of restrictions, the Malls will be full of wondering ppl who have nothing to do but just wonder around, they are not good for their business. In the UK there was a ban in Malls on people wearing Hoodies.. So you have to remember that the Malls have to look after the business first..

I went to Villaggio yesterday and noted there was a ban. Interesting enough, the only people I saw banned were Pakistanis (males) wearing the typical clothing (dunno what's called). All the other males who were wearing western clothes did manage to come in, though.

Now don't get me wrong, I think they should do something to lower the crowd who is not going to spend money there (not sure how, though, perhaps charging an entrance fee or something like that). But it's interesting that they only banned the guys wearing their typical clothing.

It's funny how things r here. First these workers dont get paid enough and then they are stopped from entering the malls. Alot of people here have no fear of karma what so ever... It's a shame that a great country like this with an amazing ruler, has such issues.

In other countries people have issues with their medical insurance and taxes, here we have problems with the security at malls lol.

How about a family day on the roads too on Friday?

Nobody should drive a car without a female inside. Or nobody should walk the roads with out a female!

Since these bachelors are going some place they will end up in front of malls, beaches, parks, coffee-shops, crowding them!

They should also be given GPS Beeper-Tags when they come in close proximity around Malls, Beaches, parks & coffee-shops...they start beeping loudly...so that everybody around knows this guy has broken the law & hand him over to the police.

well.. we have deiscussed this issue thousand times already...

that's what they are doing in City Centre as well..

... now Villagio.. i noticed, this mall became really overcrowded latly.. once i even couldn't find a parking, gave up and left the place.. and i needed to buy so many things ( i never go to the Mall "just because".. as the matter of fact, i hate malls, but these are the only places in qatar where you can bay at least something).. but I am sure, some people came to the mall at the same day just "to kill the time", without any intention of buying… so.. you see??

and yes, what's the point to report it to the management since the security definitely doing it upon the same management order, and not by their own initiative, for sure...

This matter should've been reported with Villagio management to get clarification. I am a filipino and will not condone/tolerate such action if it is indeed 'discriminatory'. Such acts belong to the middle ages! Get the name of that security guy and report him to Villagio management. It's highly improbable this act is management sanctioned. This is bad for business!!
