Digging Indian Books and Authors

I have just finished "The Inheritance of Loss" by Kiran Desai. I really loved this book. It was so beautifully written and conjured up such powerful imagery that I felt that I was in India whenever I was reading the book. Just before that I read "God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy which I also loved for its humor, pathos and tragedy. I have never been to India and had never thought much before about Indian novelists.
Can anyone recommend some other Indian novelists that I should be reading?
Shantaram is a definite must read. Well it's not written by an Indian, but the author would disagree coz he thinks he's more Indian than Aussie.

It's an autobiography of sorts, but written in a way that reminds me of what Chopper (Mark Brandon) Reid once said - "never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn" LOL!
The movie should be out soon, starring Johnny Depp.
Britexpat, Kama Sutra is great- but haven't seen anything good since that one..

These are some books i've enjoyed in original version (mayb coz i can identify with the land n the times). Not sure how much justice has been done to the original during translation.

by vikram seth is by far my favourite. this time on my trip to india i read The Mystic Masseur by naipaul. that was good too. the god of small things was ooookkkk.

"Autobiography of an Unknown Indian" is a gud read too.
Try "Freedom at midnite" (Larry Collins & Dominique lapierre) if you are into historic stuff. After reading that u'll defenitely feel "Fact is stranger than fiction"...very gripping.
Gita Mehta - shez more famous for her essays(Karma Cola is a nice read) but hav read mixd reviews abt 'Raj'.

Try novels of 'Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay', the bengali author. Not sure how many of his works have come in English, though.

"the god of small things" was very special. but i didnt really feel very engrossed in "the inheritance of loss". infact, i felt so boring i've left it half way and never bothered to complete it! :( ... but "the god of small things" is right up there with the best i've ever read. arundhati can make u almost touch and feel things with the way she writes!

"The Namesake' by Jhumpa Lahiri....was recently made into a movie...yet to read the book.
Try R.K.Narayan's "The Guide" Quite a different style from Desai or Roy.
