taxi drivers.. HOPELESS...

qatarisun

I am just boiling!!! you give them ALL possible directions and explanations: how many traffic lights you have to pass from some land mark, which service road to take, what you will see on your right hand and left hand side, beside which building exactly you have to stop...everything…
but they still manage to bring your guest to the absolutely different part of the city.. and WHY IS THAT??

I had a taxi driver once, on order to come and collect me from my villa. 15 minutes after he should have turned up, I got a phone call from the taxi company telling me that the driver can't get to the villa, as the road is completely barricaded and blocked off by the police.

This confused me, as I was standing outside watching the various traffic driving by as per normal.

It wasn't until I spoke directly to the taxi driver that I realised he was at the wrong end of the road, trying to drive into the school. He didn't get a tip, that day.

The taxi company is just as bad - they say they havn't got enough taxis to send one within the next 3 hours, but they have around 100 of the damn things sat outside City Centre Mall, doing nothing. The excuse?

"Oh, those aren't phone-call taxis."

"Then why do they have your phone number all over them in really big numbers?!?!"

"Ummmmmm, they're not phone-call taxis."

What a bunch of cretins.

"Never argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience."

Me fine. Evening was another routine. Did not go out. How are you? Hope by now you would replay what happened and laugh to tears about it.

I fully agree with you. What you said is complete logic. But you know the quality of sevice here. I better keep my mouth shut. Some do not like to hear or read about the truth.

You are very lucky to start the meeting 20 mins late.

Good night.

how are you today? did you have a nice evening?...well.. it was not MY private guest.. otherwise i would definitely go and pick him.. the guy came from France for the meeting with our company and booked the limo from the hotel... neither you, nor I and no one else should go and pick up the attendees from all over Doha's Hotels for the meeting, right? it is nonsense, right? that's what taxis and limos are for, right? it was not any other solution for this particular case, only to keep him on line and keep explaining to him how to get to the office, and he kept explaining to the driver where to turn, where to take left or right.. isn't that insane? we started a meeting 20 minutes later because of that!

Unfortunately. What we learn and read in the books does not apply here. You should always expect the unexpected. Trust daddy (me).

If I were you, I would either send my driver or go myself to pick the guest.

I did mention once about what did my friend experience when she was travellig and got a karwa. the driver did not know where the airport is. So always use your imagination and consider always the worst scenario.

as i have experienced with some taxi drivers... specifically that lightblue cars... definitely i aint posting here if i didnt manuever my steering quickly coz sadly it was a tremendous fault he did against my way. without any signs of courtesy, that bluecar driver in the centerlane suddenly cut on my front quickly just to pick that people who suddenly sign to ride for a taxi service. Am driving from the outermost lane, and the last choice i should do is to get off to the shoulder as not even the strongest brake could help me anymore not to touch him from back. From the smooth road, down to the sandy road shoulder, all foul rubber smells and smokes and a bowl of dust off road fumed out...

is that the way they are trained for?

so why i always say.... karwa is not teaching driving...

instead .. they are good teaching their drivers with DIVING along with their vehicles...

I know!! Buy a taxi! then you can guarantee you will get where you want! Sit in the back seat and just tell the driving seat where you want to go!! First class door to door service!!

Really if you want to find a taxi, go around in small streets and you will find some in front of cafeterias, that is my new strategy:) It works, I am waiting for a driver couple of minutes to finish with tea and everything is ok. But I saw some cars parked in front of some private houses, I don't know what are they doing there, maybe they are familiarizing with neighborhood.

You enter coordinates into a GPS, this could be lat-lon, UTM or since Qatar has their own coordinate system which is very good you could use theirs which is QNG. ok, tell me what the driver should enter the GPS in order to reach a distination? C-Ring Road is not good enough, right? Al emadi building is not good enough either.. obviously Cinema Traffic Lights is not good at all... so how GPS is working in Doha, where actually there are no addresses?...

...but the silliest thing that you mentioned was: "you probably don't really know where you are".... if i didn't know where I AM, i most likely wouldn't start this topic.... my suggestion is to read the Forum Topic carefully next time... of course IF you want to post a comment on it...otherwise you might look silly.. thanks.

..and nobody is talking about fortunate YOU... i am talking about the guest who came to Doha from France for 1 day for the meeting with our Company. Next time I will suggest all our guests to make sure they have either good friends in Doha to drive them to the meetings, or to buy the car prior to coming to qatar, as qatari taxi drivers are comletely stupid, hopeless and useless...

I obviously underestimated your intelligence. I didn't realize you could enter "Cinema Traffic Lights" into a GPS and it would take you there. As I mentioned earlier there are many descriptions used for the same "landmarks" here. You also don't seem to recognize sarcasm but then again you sound like you must be perfect so you don't experience it much. I fortunately don't have to depend on taxis, I have friends and a car.

this one doesn't want to understand what's written..lol...hummer_H3..if you bothered to read (and TO UNDERSTAND) the initial topic, you wouldn't post this stupid reply...

Majnoon Ajnabi.. how on the earth can you spell differently: "CINEMA TRAFFIC LIGHTS on C-RING ROAD"???what the hell the taxi driver doesn't know this intersection? Specially it was clearly explained that if you come from Ramada signal, pass the FIRST traffic lights (where are two petrol stations on both sides of the road), then pass the SECOND traffic lights, which is Al Muntazza traffic lights, then take the service road, and just before the THIRD traffic lights, which is CINEMA TRAFFIC LIGHTS you will find Al Emadi building.

is that clear? everyone who lives in Doha more than 1-2 months, and not a taxi driver, would be able to find this intersection. but THIS driver took our guest to some other Al emadi building, which is in the airport area... so don't make this stupid comments that I DON"T KNOW WHERE I AM. ..and how eventually the guy who was sitting in the taxi (and who is THE FIRST TIME IN DOHA) was able to direct this stupid driver following my explanations??? Coz he was sitting actually in the car, was listening to my explanation over the phone, and was showing to the driver with his hands where to go! so again, if you don't have anything clever to say, better don't even try...

it doesn't matter if they have a GPS if you can't give them the coordinates of your location. The info in the GPS is limited and everyone has a different spelling for streets, compounds etc. And besides haven't you realized yet that all taxi drivers know everything so you probably don't really know where you are.

It has happened to all us.In my first week in doha, my cab driver didn't knw the way to the Airport!!!!! I'm glad i had memorised the same. One of the many "Doha Rocks" incidents :-)

Mowasalat has been trying hard to recruit and train drivers to keep up with the demand. One driver of mine cd barely reverse my car when he needed to get out of one tight lane after one accident in front of us (i almost missed tht flight).

So i'm glad they atleast know how to drive safely.Memorising directions and major landmarks should be the next priority of Mowasalat.I don't think all cabs have GPS (i've seen em only in some of them).

I feel sorry for these guys - most of them have to pay some QR 360 per day for car (increased from QR220/day) and the money they make over and above that they have to keep. One of the worst jobs to have in Doha.Sometimes they barely make QR220.The fixed salary cab drivers - those in the earlier contracts have a fixed salary of QR1,200 per mnth.

that also happened to me couple of times.. fist they are pretty confident, and next second they suddenly forget where they are and where do they go...

whellw..the limo was hired for the certain lengh of time time...so he didn't really care about the meter.. he just was not able TO LISTEN, TO HEAR, TO THINK and TO UNDERSTAND... so finally i had to explain the same things over the phone to the guy who was in this taxi, and who is absolutely new in Doha, and he managed to direct this stupid driver!

What I know is that, they have a quota from their daily shift and they need to reach that amount at least before the end of their shift. Therefore, they have to play stupid as if they don't know the directions in order to let you pay more than you are expecting.

Tactics.... bad tactics.......so so bad....

well.. when I just came to Qatar, one day I supposed to meet one friend. First he tried to explain to me what I should tell the taxi driver. but then he said, forget about it, he will never bring you there, just tell him to drop you off beside Ramada Hotel, i will pick you up from there...

When I picked the taxi, THE TAXI DRIVER DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO GET TO RAMADA HOTEL!!

these limo drivers are actually not employees of the hotel. they are only contracted by the hotel to serve their clients.

had a terrible experience too. i got a limo service from Four Seasons Hotel to my flat in Al Ghanim. i showed him the fastest, shortest way. when we reached the front of our building he asked me how i know that way. i said "of course i live here". then he said he doesnt know how to go back. WTF!!!

that's what i say.. if even the regular Karwa cars have it, LIMO sure suppose to have it anyway!! otherwise it turns out to be a circus.... I have to literally lead the guest over the telephone from one point of the city to another !!

QS I'm not sure about the Limo, but all Karwa cabs have them. It's in their meters.

maybe:

- they dont know what's left and what's right;

- they cannot differentiate main road from service road and vice versa;

- they are just completely lost. they dont even know the names of the streets.

its still a puzzle to me why some karwa drivers are hired, how they pass the assessment of trainors and how they got their license. most of them (not all) only know how to ride the car but dont know how to drive using their common sense.

Cuz they are stupid and new. THey have GPS in their Karwa cabs, but idiots dont know how to use them. Next time just smack them on their heads and tell them to use their brains first then the GPS.
