Excited! Qatar Airways Job Offer

checkers
By checkers

Hi all,

Before anything else, gotta apologise for all these perennial questions on the forum - but like a few others, I've also been offered a job by Qatar Airways during their global recruitment drive here in Singapore.

I'm single and am really excited about the prospect of working overseas for the first time in my life. But beyond my excitement, I'm just wondering if you guys think the package they're offering me is worth it. If I can make ends meet on my own in Doha.

This is what they're giving me per month:

- Basic of QR7500 (though I'm planning to see if I can negotiate it up to QR8000)

- Housing allowance QR2500 or the company accomodation

- Transport allowance of $600

I've been in the airline industry for 10 years in Singapore and am only drawing an approximate salary of S$1800 (whereas it's almost S$3000 in Qatar) at the moment. It may seem like a lot of difference - but I do realise I've got to take into consideration other personal expenses that I've been taking for granted back home in Singapore.

Would really like your opinion on whether this is a reasonable offer? Thanks in advance for any help! ;-)

Heya Hawker,

Yup I figured I'll get the company's accomodation. Then if I really feel like I need to move out, I guess it'll be easier once I've familiarized myself with the place ;-)

Congrats Baedaebook! We'll be seeing each other in Doha soon! ;-)

By hawker• 14 Apr 2008 09:21

btw @checker, it is better to get the company accomodation because, by the time you arrive here they'll gonna put you first on a hotel for about a week or two. then if you're not taking the company accomodation, you'll have to find your own accomodation in just a small period of time, and yet it will be very difficult coz' you've just came here. that's why it is always best to get hthe company accomodation plus it will be free of the utilities as well :) hope this helps

eiiyyy Checker, what's the post you applied for?  if i where you, since you are single i would take up the accomodation they are offering. since renting a place here in Doha is going up at since a couple of years back. and just fyi, qatar airways annual leave ticket is always "subject to load"

Hey Sonia, I couldn't answer your question since I wasn't sure if I'd accept the offer or not prior to the pay revision. Besides, it does take a lot more research and planning to determine if I could indeed uproot myself from Singapore to Doha.

Re: Job Application.

There was a global recruitment drive here in Singapore as I've mentioned in my initial post ... and I went for the interview here in Singapore - and that's how I got the job. Guess I'm pretty lucky actually ... But you can log on to qatarairways.com to apply for jobs online I believe. Give it a try when your sis is ready?

checkers

Yup. Got my total pay package of QR11,600 even though my basic is only readjusted to QR8,500. I guess I'm still happy nonetheless ;-) ...

Will probably be there in June or July - let you guys know when lunch will be! Will probably need your expertise when I'm beginning to move in!

Hey checkers,

Not to worry if you don't get the salary that you want.

Just take it as an experience and enjoy the travelling benefits that QR has to offer.

If you manage to get within that salary range that I've guessed, you'll need to

buy me lunch!

Anyway, welcome to Qatar!

Alright, hey there Checkers,

How you doing, sorry couldnt get a moment to reply back, but now anyways here I go,

First things first, regarding Girls welcomed to Doha, LOL dont worry girl, you will know a lot more as and when you get on this site...Naaa...everyone who is nice is welcome, we just play along...Single you see...you are...thats why..LOL...Kidding..

Alright regarding your salary, as much as I am no one to judge, but I see that thats quite a raise you have asked for from 7500 -> 11000, hmmmm, dont see that coming, but still good you asked and now lets see what their final say would be, hopefully something above 7500/-

And regd accomo, absolutely girl, you ought to be staying in the comp acco that would work out pretty decent...

And when you get here you could give me a treat thats alright, if your salary offer does go up...LOL

And very rightly put, sometimes it aint about the money but more of the experience...so once again buddy...

Welcome on QL and welcome aboard QA...

Cheers...

Hey Think2,

Many thanks for sharing your experiences! Yes, it is indeed a Grade 6 position. Doesn't look like you really enjoy Doha, do you?

Re: Basic Salary - I've asked for a revision to QR11,000 but I doubt they'll give it to me. Trying my luck to see how far they'll go really, and then negotiate from there.

Re: Apartment. Yup, I do realise that it'll be a shared accomodation. Didn't think I'll be able to afford an apartment all on my own. Weighing the two, I figure I'm probably better off taking the company's quarters.

Thanks for the advice too on transport and food. And that's the reason why I didn't accept the offer immediately. If possible, I'd be exhilarated if they can meet me halfway of what I asked (on the salary).

Thanks again, Think2. Hope to see you in the company! ;-)

By checkers• 12 Apr 2008 17:14

Hey Violet,

Thanks for your advice. My S$1800 includes my CPF. But I'm grossly underpaid for what I do. The company doesn't even care about the fact that I've already upgraded myself by completing my degree 2 years ago. Only a promotion to an officer post with a salary increment of S$180. I'm happy to learn all these things where I am - but I feel stuck and unable to progress (mainly 'coz it's a Japanese company) and that's the main reason why I'm leaving.

I've more or less decided that I'll be coming to Qatar even if they're still giving me 7,500. It's more the experience that I want and the opportunity than anything else. Of course the money matters too - but that's not what's most important at the moment. I'm asking for 11,000 and quite frankly, do not really expect them to acede to what I've asked for. Just seeing how far they're willing to pay me so I know my "market value".

Still, I really appreciate your advice - at least I know how realistic my expectations should be. ;-) ... Hope to see you soon in Qatar!

Hi,

A few experiences to share:

(1) The transport and housing allowances you receive are fixed based on your grade (look like it's grade 6) and non-negotiable. So I would suggest that ask for a high basic salary to compensate for these.

(2) If you take the company accomodation you would be sharing an apartment with another QR staff (separate bedroom). And for QR2500 very likely you would be renting a shared apartment/villa with other people. So you may need to be clear on this. Some people feel frustrated about this 'sharing' so please bear it in mind.

(3) QR600 transport allowance should be enough for your daily commuting and weekend getaway. Unless you like going out every week-night. Some of my coworkers pay QR150/200 per month to cabin crew drivers for pickup between home and office everyday.

(4) My S'pore coworkers told me that daily stuffs, e.g. food, here are more expensive than in S'pore. So even though you are receiving a higher salary, you may increase your expenditures by maintaining similar level of living standards. Unfortunately, can't give you more precise comparisons as I am from an even more expensive place :o)

Hope this helps.

You've mentioned - "....airline industry for 10 years in Singapore and am only drawing an approximate salary of S$1800......"

Exclude or include CPF?

I think, asking for basic - 11k  from 7.5k - is way too high.

Forgoing housing allowance doesn't mean you'll be staying at co. accomodation.

Probably you'll get somewhere close to TOTAL of: 10600(your original offer) - 11,300K

*Fingers crossed*, wish you all the luck.

That's a good offer. But it depend on your lifestyle. Like how and where you will spend your money.

Think twice and thrice before you hand in your resignation.  If you think you are going to miss the sun, sea and sand of Singapore, then its not an issue, we have more than enough sun, sea and sand in Qatar.

Dont expect anything to be similar to Singapore, there is nothing that you can compared to Singapore here. If you dont drive here, it going to be frustrating, if you drive then its like driving in a war zone.  You can forget about depending on public transport here.

I am here because my hubby is posted here from Singapore.  Need to accompany him here as he cant managed to be alone here  and I am also being given allowance to be here, if not for that I will be the first to say goodbye to Doha.

Like what you say chances like that dont come knockng twice on the door ...  if you consider this a chance - then goodluck to you and all the best from a fellow Singaporean who have the taste of Doha.

By checkers• 12 Apr 2008 06:39

It's in the Revenue Management Department.

I've upped my asking basic to be QR11,000 with transport allowance QR1,000 - and forgoing the housing allowance since I figure I'd probably live in the company's quarters anyway. They havn't reverted to me yet .... Crossing my fingers ...

I know I'll miss my sun, sea and sand here in Singapore but I'm ready to give it a shot. Chances like that don't come knocking twice on the door ...

checkers ... i am not from Singapore. I lived in Singapore for 2 yrs before we came to Doha. I am not perticularly think that Qatar is great. To be honest with you money is the main reason we living here, in the mean time i am just trying to make the most of it.

If my other half can make the same amount of $$$ in Singapore ... i will jump to next flight and going back to Singapore anytime.

Hey Ksarat,

Thanks for the extremly warm welcome! ;-) .. Never realised girls are so popular in Qatar.

Saw that you mentioned QAR 7800 is a reasonable basic for a junior position ... but when I called to clarify with them, they told me I'm actually shortlisted for a executive position which means more responsibilities etc. You still think QAR 7800 is incentive enough for me to pack my bags and move to Qatar?

I've got 10 years experience in the airline. How much do you reckon I can negotiate for? Really will appreciate any advice you can give! ;-)

Basic salary is  ok,  but better take the co. accomodation,  safer for girls like you to stay with fellow QR employees, u might as well save with the transportation allowance.

Hey there, sheeeesh sorry mate, didnt know I was talking to a girl, now that makes me all the more interested....LOL...kidding...(get used to that humour alright...)

Anyways back to the topic, well, QR 600/-, dont think its going to do much good, atleast QR 900/- - QR 1000/- should do a little bit just in case you find yourself sitting behind the steering wheel of a car sometime...;)

And naa, asking for more is never an unreasonable request girl, if you dont ask, you dont get anything, so ask and see, if they give its your good luck, if not its their good luck...LOL...;)

Alright, and take an advice, dont resign untill you get your new Employment Visa in hand...

Till then, cheers...

And now (since you are a girl), Welcome to Qatar and QL ,

Hey all,

Thanks so much for all your kind wishes and prompt responses! It makes the decision a whole lot easier!

Re: Transport Allowance - that should have been QR600 only. Not that I was expecting a lot though (I just can't drive - being the girl that I am). Totally hopeless when it comes to big machines and engines! Hahaz!

I'm thinking of pushing my luck to see if they'll give me QR8000 - would you guys think that's an unreasonable request?

Hey there buddy,

Well firstly, for your excitement and the job offer I have to tell Congrats...

Now moving on,

Your package as it sounds looks pretty decent, since you are a single guy moving into Qatar, however having said that, there is a considerable amount of decision making that takes place keeping in mind the type of position and the level that you have been offered...

At the moment I would say QR 2500/- for a single person for accomodation is reasonably ok but you would have to make do with a Sharing for sure, or else you might as well take the company accomodation, that way you will atleast have people of the same company staying with ya...

And for Transportation I didnt get that either your excitement took you beyond High Skies of Qatar Airways that you put the wrong currency or that allowance is quite good...

Apart from that basic of QR 7500/- is again according to your lifestyle but on the whole its quite a good amount (applicable to the lower grades only, not a senior staff position...)

So there you go mate, thats about a review that I have for your offer based on Qatar...

Anything else just ask and we'lll try to answer that...

Cheers....

And congrats once again...
