International Potluck Ladies Group. Egyptian Day.

By novita77

I been with this group for over 3 years now. This group was founded by Kak Hasnah. She used to only have 25 ladies coming to her house, bringing food that typical of country of member's origin. Hence the name of International Potluck coming from. Kak Hasnah used to run the same group when she lived in Saudi.

Today ... I spoke to her on the meeting. International Potluck Ladies Group have grown to 380 members from 65 countries.

The meeting is held once a month in Al Jazi compound club house. The theme of the meeting change every month. Hosting by different countries. This month the Egyptian Ladies hosting the meeting ... hence we called it 'Egyptian Day'.

We always have a local airline sponsored the group ... this month Egypt Air giving away a free ticket Doha - Cairo - Doha for the main raffles prize. Unfortunately I did not win that one.

Normally the members required to bring a dish to be share by 10 to 15 people, but this month meeting ... Egyptian Embassy donated the food for the brunch for the International Potluck. The food was yummy ... it is said by one of the hosting members Totta Thomas as a pure egyptian food.

The most interesting part for me from the meet was the demonstration how to make egyptian pies by Bahri Restaurant. Here is the videos ... I call it acrobatic dough lol. I took some videos :

At the moment the membership is closed ... as Kak Hasnah said, she will open it again after the summer holiday when some people leaving the country.

If any of you ladies interested to come to the International potluck ladies group after the summer, here is the e-mail of the group :

Well at the moment we're fostering rather than adopting permanently, cos to take her back to the UK when we leave would mean 6 months quarantine which we're not prepared to put her through.

We picked her up last Thursday. She's fine in the apartment but a bit wary of all the cars and construction noise around West Bay when we go out, so we take her to the large bit of land next to the InterCon to run her, which she loves.

You're more than welcome to come and visit us next time you're here!

That's what we thought, but Xena and Desert_Queen persuaded us otherwise so we have fostered Camy;

Look how fierce she is! She'll protect me from these insults!

Yes, and your reporting is much more interesting to read! The newspaper reports never sound like they were actually there, and if they were they were just reporting, not joining in the fun.

Well you can give it a try, but I'm not responsible for the consequences, or the heads that will go with it..:))

Albahri bakery, down the Nasr street,  does a very good job. I love the Egyptian pies they bake. Especially the sweet ones.

Mom visits our local bakery back in Cairo and keeps watching (she's bee doing this for years). She gets back home to try to make it the same way, and the dough travels all the way into our faces!!

She’s pure Egyptian, but it takes a master to shape and bake that way. The trick is not to have any holes in the dough circle while spreading and tossing it in the air..:)
