Well Gypsy during Saddam's time, barely any people were allowed to enter Iraq. Btw all the violence and trouble that is going on is usually in Baghdad. SItes for Holy shrines like Karbala, Najaf and Kadmain are much safer. Exactly a month ago we had a holy event and 9 million people were in Karbala.
It's always the small things that make big differences.
as a canadian you can obtain your visa for jordan in the airport. for syria you will have to do it through the syrian embassy, you must take your visa through the embassy even if they tell you that you can get it in the airpiort... you will face problems later on.
no clue on iraq, policy changes by the day at the momment.
I think it was safer when Saddam was ruling, we hear lot of Bomb blast in Iraq...100's of people killed everyday..why would someone want to take a chance to visit such a place?
lol relax Andrew, Saddam is not ruling anymore. People can actually visit Iraq. We have alot of holy shrines in Iraq that people have been waiting for too long to visit.

I'd suggest goin by car, but if u go by plane, u'll have to hire a car or go by bus to Iraq, there's no other way and you cannot go there alone. Secondly, if you go to iraq from syria or jordan u need a multiple entry visa to get back in syria or jordan. I suggest going to Jordan by cab aswell from syria or even the other way round, it will save you alot of money. You need to get intouch with the embessies for more details and info.
By the way try applying two week prior to your travel. They usually take along time for Canadian, European, American, south African and Austrailian passports.

Hub and I lived in Basrah for a couple of years way back when Iraq was at war with Iran. We met some very nice Iraqis :D
I used to fly into Kuwait, stay over night, and then drive through to Basrah the next day.
