Availability of maids & nannies
It appears that most expats have maids. I have noticed a fair "maid wanted" ads on various forums -- does that mean that good maids are few and far between? How long does it take to get set up with a maid. . .either an in-town maid or hiring one through an agency (presumably via the Philippines?)? Do the maids generally shop & cook as well, or are they simply cleaners? (We had a posting in Argentina, where maids did everything so I got a bit spoiled and may need to temper my expectations!)
Do these maids generally serve as nannies as well? If not, how are nannies obtained. ..and any idea what they cost? How easy is it to find a nanny.
Finally, this will be my first move with the kids and I am very nervous about it. My 2.5-year old is super-active and is in the throes of the "horrifying twos" (as step beyond the "terrible twos"!). . .and my 6.5 month old will be crawling, if not walking, by the time we get our house. How QUICKLY can we get someone to help us? I can't imagine navigating Doha while looking for ____ that we need for the house, unpacking, finding a school for Patrick, etc. . .all the while having the two kids with me. Is household help (call it a maid/nanny/whatever) something that I can find immediately?
Thanks in a advance for your help. . .I promise to return the favor once I'm settled in
Roxanne

So I guess if I need someone to watch my girls every once in awhile so my husband and I can go to dinner or a work event, we are best to hire a neighbor's teenager like we would in the states? (babysitter)
We will be in a compound so I'm assuming there will be lots of girls ages 15-18 who want to earn a little spending money babysitting for 2-3 hours.
Any idea what a good amount is? We typically pay $15 an hour for the neighbor girl to watch our kids.
We were thinking of a nannie, but we don't really need someone on a full time basis.
expat, i agree up to some point.. yes, they have to meet certain criteria, but it is obviously that nanny "with a college degree, perfect English and the other things that would come with a nanny..." would cost you per month at least 5 times more, I guess.. and not only money... it wouldn't be easy to find such person who would agree to work as nanny while possessing "college degree, perfect English and the other things"...
Oh, I know they must "import" them :\
The difference here is that the agencies seem to be willing to import any warm human body. In other countries the "nannies" must meet certain qualifications, possess skills, etc. Here it's more like "you're female, you are willing to work as a housemaid/nanny?" voila! - you're a nanny!
Mind you, my housemaid was originally hired through an agency and I am perfectly happy with her.. .but she's doesn't come with a college degree, perfect English and the other things that would come with a nanny obtained through a real nanny agency. (Then again, there's a much different price tag, too.)
Expat, they must be "importers". People come here exceptionally for work. No one is coming here because he/she got a "green card" or "Landed Immigrant status", like in US or Canada, and after that start looking for Job. How one can expect to find "freelance" full time nanny? Even the agency wouldn't help you in the way you see it, as again the agency would have to "import" a nanny from other country and bring her in Qatar under your sponsorship. Once this nanny is done working for you, she has to be sent back home. This is a Qatar law. Therefore no free nannies are available.
James3, you have to apply in the Immigration/Labour Deptmt's for the permission to bring your own nanny.
Good luck.
Thanks, I believe you, but need to find a Nanny regardless.
Believe it or not, James3, there really isn't an agency - at least not like an "agency" in the Europe, Aus or the US. They're more "importers" here, which is sad but true. I'm sure some must be better than others, but don't expect a true "nanny". Sorry :(
I also have trouble finding a good Nanny.
Doha must have a good company that specializes in Nannies.
Does anybody know the phone number/details of a (Good) Nanny recruting agency?
Thanks!
Thank you very much for all the info here. This is very helpful. I also looked around and there is this service for expatriates which I also found helpful.
It seems really hard to find a good help here, so if you have any more suggestions, they are greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
I may recommend you one of the best and known cleaners of the city named san diego house cleaning who does quality and good services at a reasonable price. I guarantee you your satisfaction and assurance of a job well done.

we rather need a housemaid.
LOOKING FOR NANNY FOR MY 2 YRS OLD SON AS I HAVE A REAL ESTATE JOB SO NEED ONE URGENTLY PLS ADVICE THKS
As long as you stay away from (JASSIM Decoration & Services Co.) , we had bad experience with them.
we asked for a maid / nanny to look after our two babies, only for the maid to refuse to baby-sit after 7 days from arrival to Doha!
JASSIM Decoration & Services Co. is still refusing to fully refund us!
are there no CHILD CARE CENTRES for infants to take care of kids when women are at work???????... as leaving a child with a nanny seems scarry
We have just arrived in Doha and would like to bring our trusted nanny that we had for four years in the Philippines.
Is it possible for me to sponsor her so she can get a visa?
I am employed in QP on senior staff level.
I need a nanny for my 3 kids. I will be starting a new
job. can you tell me is it safe to have nannies in qatar?
Hi,
I would say you'll be able to find a maid/ houseboy for general house duties cleaning etc but as far as including nanny duties I wouldn't get your hopes up. They exist but more like babysitters.
It depends what you need but if you're expecting professional nannies cheap you will have great difficulty. I employ professional my last temporary nanny was from south africa and made a huge difference to my life as I need full time help. I now have a couple coming from the UK at the end of the month. You can expect to pay anything from 350 GBP TO 800 + a week. Agency fees for placing abroad are extortionate but there are some great online sites where you can post ad's or search cv's www.nannyjob.co.uk is good as is www.gumtree.com I found my latest couple through an ad I placed and I had hundreds of replies. They both attract lots of professional nannies who want to travel and am seeing more and more people in Qatar advertising here.
If you want any more help let me know. I don't know where you are but if you're from the UK or are still there and want to go down that route I would try and interview before you come.
We were very good to our maid and she stole so we sent her home and then we found our plumbing was jammed she had flushed a t-shirt into the
pipes. We asked her if we ever did anything to cause the theft or did we mis
treat her, she said NO. Even my friend had to release her maid from being too good to her, she introduced her to other maids and then she started going out all the time without permission. She told my friend it was her fault as she introduced her to these ladies! If you sponsor a maid you are reasponsible for their behaivor so its a bit risky. Sometimes you get lucky maybe 1 out of 5. Another friend her maid was re-packing her household items and selling them in her compound, when the maid left she found her grocery bill for soap etc was very small, she was also prostituting. At least if you get a maid through an agency you can return if they are not good.
Mostly, they do for the house cleaning, having babyset etc. that they can do for you. If your lucky you can find good housemaid and it depends also how you treat them. If your good to them they are good to you as well.
