Cockroaches in the bakery

irrysa
By irrysa

I went to do some shopping yesterday. The usual grocery stuff, but my main point was to buy some bread. I went to one of the nearby shopping centres.

After filling my cart up, I’ve finally went to the bread section, which was taken care of one of the local bakeries, that is also quite famous for its sweets. I was about to reach for some bread when I saw a cockroach walking all over one of the bread shelves.

So gross! I have called one of the guys from inside that section…my luck, he didn’t speak English and I don’t know how to say cockroach in Arabic! :P

I’m telling him “You have cockroaches on your bread”. He looked at me, opened his mouth and said “This one?”, pointing at the bread.

So I’ve said it again “You have cockroaches!”

-“No, Madame, we don’t have”

-“I’ve just seen it right here”

He smiled, not knowing what I mean.

-“Do you know what’s a cockroach?”, I asked.

-“I don’t know”

-“It’s a bug! A cockroach!”

-“If not here, we don’t have”

I don’t have to say that I didn’t buy that bread, do I? ;o)

I had millions of them when I first moved into my half of the villa, it took me three visits from the pest control to get rid of them.

My neighbours leave a lot of garbage outside and don't clean very well so recently I had a rat. It must be a male rat as he ate his way through  the handcreme tubes.

One day him and I had a confrontation and neither of us knew what to do - I because I was scared he would bite me and he, because he might have got caught. He came up through the hole where the washing machine pipe was in and he was big rat.

So now I have closed that hole and let the washing machine drain in the toilet - what a life.

But once, when I went for a pee in our office loo in Jeddah, I stood up to flush and saw a cockroach in the toilet bowl.

I don't know which of us got the bigger fright!  Him for thinking the moon had descended on him, or me for realising he had been right under me whilst I was seated!

Didn't anyone tell you not to believe everything you read? Yes there are cockroaches and rats even ( only saw one in all my life here!) but no, Doha is not infested with them.

with the lizards as they eat the roaches.

They do tend to cr*p a lot though.

Roaches are not specific to any particular area, they are all over and  fact of life.

was seen by my hubby last week at Bukhara Restaurant (Indian place at tennis stadium complex).   Luckily? he told me the day after we ate there.    He said he saw a big lizard run across the floor behind me in the restaurant.

I saw cockroaches at Lulu's more than once  (HATE HATE that place)  I'm sure they are everywhere here in Doha.   Only buy food that is covered and wash all your fruits and vegetables the moment you get home.   WITH SOAP  I might add

I thought they had got rid of them years since.

Big things they were and every time you switched your headlights on they scattered.

They were climbing house walls...up the corner and onto the roof.

That was when they stipulated that houses had to have smooth outside walls.

of in the early 80's when the cafe in The Centre was run on a franchise by a well known company. A teacher from Doha College (and he's now at the college on his second stint) ordered a steak sandwich.

When he bit into it, it crunched.

Laying on top of the steak under the bread was a roach.

They did apologise and gave him another steak sandwich.

If you see something like this please report it to the municipality as well when you but minced meat and the under meat is already a little brown. Please also check cheese and cold cuts that you buy packed I have seen in the large supermarkets that some packed cold cuts look discoloured. These things should be reported because 1) it is your health 2) it is your money.

Maybe for that Bateel bread, it is not from that bakery, it is from the store you bought. And if Owen is buying a plastic wrapped brownies (which is the one making her balloon, sorry Owen, i haven't meet you but i just hope i guessed it wrong) then that is safe. The croaches are stationed in the area of breads so it is the manager or supervisor is to blame for that. Whilst the Hot bread Bakery, it's in their own bakery. And go around the back of the bakery near the FFC in Fareej Al Nasser, the breads are exposed outside in the sun uncovered while they put it on the delivery van to tranport.

Roaches, unfortunately they are around a lot. I remember the first time I saw a roach. It was not in Doha but in my hotel room on the 30th floor of a 5 star hotel in Dallas Texas.... there was no bread in my room.... And the hotel was brand new.

Unfortunately the roaches are here all over the place, even in your owm home. You have to have the pest control people come & spray every month. Or get cats, like me. They love to catch roaches and always seem to know when there is roaches around.

As to buying bread. Buy only bread that is wrapped in plastic. That is the only semi guaranteed measure you can take. Even if you do spray a lot in places where there is a lot of food around, the roaches will be back in a mum.

So please tell us what particular bakery was that... The Hot bread bakery one time and the last time i bought a bread there, I was so early, after i dropped my daughter in school i decided to buy bread before going home. So doon the bakery opened the door i get in. The salesmen are taking out those cover on top of the breads and biscuits and pies where it is not really covered on the whole food. And when i was looking what bread and cookies to buy i saw not only one but some small croaches, creeping under the pile of the cookies. Eeeeeew! And i told about them to the salesmen, and when i looked around, all of the food displayed are not fully covered. Since then, i don't but bread from that bakey again.
