weekends and socialising in Doha

My husband has just been offered a job in Doha which he is due to start on 13 January - all very exciting although I have yet to work out my three months notice at work here in London before I join him.

I was just curious to find out what sort of thing people get up to at the weekends and in the evenings. I grew up in Dubai (my parents were expats out there) before coming back to the UK to university and then to work, and wondered whether, like in Dubai, peoples' social lives in Doha revolve around playing a particular sport at a club, whether there is a 'bar' culture or whether people tend to spend time at each others houses. Would we be wise to join a club? If so, which one? I see that it is possible to get membership to some of the hotel health clubs, is this a common thing to do?

I would appreciate any insight into what there is to do in Doha outside of working hours.

Thanks

Are the clubs separated? I read in some other Qatar forum where they were describing this one club. They said the middle floor is from women only and the third floor is for couples only. Are all the clubs this way or was it just this one they were talking about?

There is a bar in every hotel, plus another good places as the rugby club or garveys.

One big club behind the Ramada named Qube.

One club at the Intercontinental hotel named Palomas.

Rydges its ok too, and theres many more. so dont worry about bars and clubs.

everything is available but with minimum options not as dubai. but at the same time here life is better in the daily activity and even from london.

traffic is easier not all the time but most of it.

I am sure you will enjoy your experience. welcome to Qatar.

Hello KJ !! You have nothing to be worried. Everything is available here... you can get involved into all sort of weekend activities here... Qatar is no way behind Dubai... There are lots of clubs here .. like Golf Club, Bowling Club.. etc.. There are pubs, bars, discos.. you can choose according to your taste. There are camping activities also at the weekend. So what else you want.... Only think you can not buy alcohol/wine from any shop here.. for that you have to get a membership from QDC which is very easy. So.. you can join ur hubby without any hesitation... Best of luck..
