Does sexual orientation matter?

just_friend
By just_friend

I am offered a pretty decent job and package. The only thing stopping me from coming over is my sexual orientation. I haven't told my employer that and don't believe there is a need to. But I am worried if ppl know that I am gay, what will happen? I am a straight acting person and behave no different compared to any straight guy.

The other question I have is that in Qatar there is definitely no chances to hang out with other gay guys or not even any "secret" or low profile community around?

Have to decide on the offer soon, appreciate your help and views on that. Thanks!

'Shaving Off Heads" & "Gay" in Qatar may be some ody lucky & some one unlucky to do this ctivity. But it is natural. Some body strong control, some body can't keep silence, some body afraid to do so far. Thanks to Gypsy, Azilana, Alexa, Qatarisun, Knoxcollege, expressing their thoughts & knowledge on thiese threads.

Gypsy, azilana, alexa, qatarisun, thanks so much for your warming comments. Thrilled to hear that being gay in Qatar is not that horrible as I have thought. Talking with the employer soon, hope I will be over and see some of your guys there.

Hopefully my head is not shaved off...

Does being “gay” affect your work performance? – this you gotta answer me :-) If not I don’t see any reason why you should inform your employer – unless you want to hit on him – then that’s a different issue.

No idea on any secret community but the next time I get hit upon, I’ll refer him to ya (i think i give out some kinda "gay" vibes hehe)

some of them love to pretend themselves lesbians right after you "spent hundreds of dollars in gifts".

specially when you are hitting on a hottie and turns out that she is a lesbian and by the time you realize that you have already spent hundreds of dollars in gifts.

and you definitely won't have a problem to share accommodation with the guy (which could be a gay on your choice).

This is just from somebody's very recent post (one guy suggests to onther guy):

"...share your flat with a man, and it will be good to have your partner with a... man".

..lol..

So do not worry, come over, I can introduce you to couple of my frineds-gays...and you can even live together if you want..lol...

Homosexuality here is much more part of the culture then Arabs are willing to admit. In all honesty I have seen less obvious homosexuality in Canada (where being gay is totally accepted) then here.

Do, I couldn't believe it when I heard it myself. Course I've met Qatari boys who are taking hormones to grow breasts and have hair to their bums. So I don't think that to many men are outed and have their heads shaved. I think it's mostly just accepted within the small Qatari community.

From what I understand from my many many gay friends is that the ONLY way you will actually get in trouble is:

1) if a Qatari complains

2) You are actually caught in the act of intercourse

Punishment for Qatari's is shaving their heads, for ex pats it's immediate deportation.

You said you are a straight acting person and behave no different compared to any straight guy....so excuse my "french"..you are still "in the closet".

IMHO...so what? Don't get me wrong. I got friends and acquaintances who holds a job, mingle with other people and free to express themselves.

You would only be having problems if you go out the norms and start breaking the law.

"Hanging out with other gay guys or not even any "secret" or low profile community around" is totally your business....

No gay community in Qatar??? you're kidding right? The gay community here is thriving and huge!! It's just not open and out there like back in the West. You will have no problem making gay friend or meeting gay men, believe me they are EVERYWHERE!

As for your employer, DO NOT mention it. Unless you've met them and know them to be an openminded WESTERN employer, don't bring it up. Being homosexual here is an unspoken part of Qatari society.
