Qatar Airways as an employer

I'm an expat (western), only English speaking, currently a resident of Qatar (family sponsorship), with a degree. I've been persuing employment opportunties at QA (commercial). Can anyone provide input on QA's reputation as an employer? Does anyone know anything of their salary ranges?

Qatar airways really sucks not only downgrading hotel accomodation to airport hotels nowsaday but cabin crew's accomodation in Doha as well. Before i joined QR i was from an UAE airline but i regretted that i left my previous airline to join QR. In my previous airline, majority of our apartments are 2 bedrooms and we have our own individual bathroom but in QR we all stay in 3 bedrooms apartment and some units have only one bathroom n three of us need to share it .It is so unhygenic, inconvenient and no privacy especially we need to use it at the same time before a flight. Moreover we are not allow to choose our housemate or choose which buliding that we want to stay but in my previous airline YES. Not only that, we can go and have a look first the building b4 we decide.Furthermore our buildings all are strategically located near corniche, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and convenienve stores are plenty downstair our building but in QR if you don't have a car you can't go anywhere n the private taxi will charge you a lot.In QR visitors needs to leave crew's apt at 10pm but my ex co at 1am. Cabin manager has own apartment no need to share but QR even you are CM u need to share.ID 90 n 50 tickets are meant for immediate family members but my ex co we can give to anyone that we want. WE are given discounts in F&B in hotels, restaurants n pubs BUT in QR nothing at all.QR Standby if no call you will have nothing but my ex co we will get PAID. ABB wants not only to cut cost by putting all his crew at airport hotels but also wants to control our social life even out of base because we can't party in the city anymore by stayibg at airport hotel

Hi,

Sorry to butt in. But I would like to say only one thing to you. Set your priorities right. If you want to work and be with family and not indulge yourself in things which are against the company, then Qatar airways is a great company. Not that I am Working for the same but I have a lot of friends in it. If you want to live a life full of fun and not abide by the rules then I feel no comapny in the world would allow that.I guess every company has its rules. Also to keep in mind that this company has grown in no time and still is. It is considered one of the best airlines in the middle east. So you are smart enought to know what you are getting into.

All the Best

Keep your nose clear. Do not indulge yourself in any gossip. Keep a very low profile. Do as you are told. Never ever question anything. Those are my advice. Very difficult ones to achieve but if you follow them you should be fine.

QR is really a bad employer. I would never ever recommend some one to work for it. They hired me for a position in Commercial Deptt. and once I got there to work they started pulling back the benefits in the name of *Policy Change*. First they took Allianz Health Insurance and told me that under new policy I and my family will be covered under Govt. Health Card which is of course not of that quality health care.

Secondly, when I was negotiating the position they told me that you will be given a "new" and "fully furnished" 2 bed accomodation. But when I got there they showed me a "10 years old newly acquired" accomodation instead of "newly constructed" one. Similarly thier definition of furnishing is quite different from a general understand-ing of a fully furnished accomodation. As there is a housing crisis in Doha so you be lucky to get an acceptable accomodation from QR without a loud shout or fight. Otherwise they will put you in hotel for 5-6 weeks and start showing you the Apts from the worst available.

I dont know why QR hired some one from USA with a Masters Degree in Computer Science along with 8 years of RM experience for 7 world class airlines while it can not take good care her/him. Employees are human capital of an organization. Similar to aircrafts they should also be treated as vauable asset of the comany and treated respectfully in terms of thier needs specially hosuing/accomodation, health care, work environment etc. And I will consider a Zero Star Airline. After 5 months

of adventure I gave up and quit. I suffered heavy loss in terms of time, money, excitement & enthausiasm as well as quality of life. Now I am back to my home and try to do a very fresh start. So please dont get in this trap otherwise cost is very high.

Hi Think Twice,

Thank you for your answers.

In summary you applied for a position, then you get or not a phone call, then an email, then interview, and then an offer letter.

Tell me do they provide accommodation and flights (door to door) for interview?

How many interviews did you have?

How long between the interview and the offer letter?

You said that you "expressed my interests to join one of the teams advertised". So you didn't apply for a specific position?

Are you willing to tell me more about you last comment maybe using my email?

I am just trying to get more information about the company. For example, who is in charge of what. It does help during an interview

Thank you

Hi DC3,

I try to answers those questions I have relevant experiences:

I sent my cv to comcareers[AT]qatarairways.com

$$$ I sent my application to another email, but that's fine as long as you are sending it to the address they specify.

Does Qatar airways always give a call or do they also send an email?

$$$ They called me from Doha around a week before interview for my agreement. Then followed by an email with details of interview, e.g. date, venue.

If they contact you for an interview do they tell you for what position?

$$$ No. I expressed my interests to join one of the teams advertised. No position specified, even during interview. The first time I knew what position they considered me was when I received my offer letter.

Regret I did not have experiences in the other questions you are concerned. Perhaps other QL guru could help.

Good luck. We will be working on same office if you come here.

Well normally Qatar Airways and not only QA for that matter of fact, infact quite a few companies in this place take a bit of a more time to respond back to career related opportunities. It is a bit of a laid back approach I would say.

They would call you if you get short-listed, so you might have wait a little longer than expected girl...

Well regarding a couple of other questions put forward by you, I couldn't be taking of a response on that since I am not too familiar with those.

So Cheers...and if you do end up at QA and in Qatar...welcome aboard...Hope you have a Safe Journey...LOL...

Hi Think Twice,

The position belongs to HQ as it is based in doha. In fact it is a management position in charge of outstations. I sent my cv to [email protected]

Does Qatar airways always give a call or do they also send an email?

If they contact you for an interview do they tell you for what position? (I applied for 2)

if after the interview you have not convinced them for the job position you applied for, do they offer you another job position? or is it just a fail or pass process?

thank for your answer

Hi DC3,

I would suggest that you send an email to the address that your submitted your application (enclosing your original email), and ask for a feedback. It looks that the position you apply for belongs to outstation not HQ, so I am not sure whether it will go thru same process.

Hi Think Twice,

Thank you for your answer.

Concerning the second point. I saw exactly the same ad (excepted that this time it is specified: east outstations management) in aviationjobsearch website today.

I just don't know how many managers they are looking for. Qatar airways has 70 outstations.

When should I consider myself not shortlisted ?

May I ask you what is your position within the company?

is having a difficult time with the new memo about them having to be at their accommodation at 10PM or ELSE.

The question I ask them (and making them comfused as well) is what if you're on your "day-off"/"on leave" the following day, is the curfew still applies?

Bottomline...I guess QA is one of the best companies here in Qatar, admit it or not, guys. They give a good competitive compensation package and benefits.

Hi DC3,

Regarding your 1st question, yes, QR does have women at managerial positions. You need not be worried about this.

Regarding your 2nd question, my personal experience is that I got a call from here to attend an interview around 3 weeks after submitting application. However, I guess different countries/dept may have different practice. One of my workmates responded to the same ad as I did, but got interview two months later.

I suggest you better take the job and if you dont like it you can quit. But what you will see at Qatar Airways you might not see elsewhere and suffering you will get at Qatar Airways you might not get else where.

Anyways Good Luck and happy flying with Qatar Airways.

regarding the cabin crew i think they have a very bad reputation in Doha

the accomodations where they stay has become some kind of a public menace with romeos driving around the areas diturbing the neighborhood and what not

I heard similar news as Vasquez regarding cabin crew. But for office position it depends on which dept & managers you are working with (=luck). After all, Doha is their HQ so things could become big & complicated.

Vasquez, don't take so much pills... Save more money here then you can finish your advanture here & enjoy all kinds of luxuries wherever you want :o)

It's a really crappy company, divided and having problems with their staff, and they treat the stewardesses really bad. Latest news is that a memo was circulated last week that bans the stewardesses for doing anything than staying at home when on standby, and that they need to get 12 hours of rest before each flight.

This leaves them without a social life.

The administration and and management treat everyone like garbage - in Europe this would be impossible but here its the way it is, they can always get some more Indians or Easter European. In the lastest 6 months 25 - 33 % of the staff has resigned or been fired so they always need new people.

Salary wise it's ok - staff wise it sucks big time

- I took the blue pill and found myself alive in Qatar - wish I had taken the red and stayed in Europe

He started in ticketing, where he got 2800 QR/ with everything, and now it up to 4500 QR/ after 6 months. But i always hear bad things from him about QA, would recommend looking for a job at another place.

Cheers

Hi UncleShark,

I dont work at QA, but many of my friends do.

I hear mainly negative things about the culture at QA, tought salary seams to be resonable to good.

If you want my personal opinion, dont join them !

There are many reasons for my opinion, but I'd rather not share it too publicly...
