Wife (to be) sponsoring husband??

Hi

I posted this in the Visa and Permits section originally, but no response there..

After scouring the Qatar Living Forum and not quite finding an answer that fits, I have a question that requires some of your local expertise to answer it.

My finace is newly employed as an English teacher in Qatar, she has dual New Zealand, British Citizenship, I am a New Zealander. She is employed on a salary comprable with a teacher in the UK with accomodation provided. I am yet to join her. Our plan is to wed either in Qatar (which is possible at the British Embassy) or outside the country.

I understand that it is a No-No for de-factos to live in Qatar, and I figured that getting married would remove any barriers to me joining her in Qatar. Her understanding, learned since arriving in Qatar, of the situation is that married or not a wife can not sponsor a husband under any circumstances, and that I require a job to be offered to me, which is not what we were told prior to her accepting the position she is now employed in.

Could someone please let me know what the requirements are in our circumstances

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tweetybird,

I will be arriving in Qatar shortly and am hoping my husband to be can join me.  Unfortunately we haven't yet found him a job, could you tell me how your husband found his job, as I was led to believe that jobs were scarce to find.

Many Thanks in anticipation of your reply

Kiwi - your wife should not have any problem sponsoring you. I sponsor my husband and other than a few raised eyebrows when applying for car loans, exit visas etc, it has not been a problem at all. Beware though that the rules that apply to women sponsored by husbands may not be uniformly enforced for men sponsored by wives. I would suggest as soon as you recieve your residency permit that your wife get you a multiple exit visa from immigration. While it is my understanding that wives do not need the exit permit under a family sponsorship there has been some discussion about family sponsored men needing one so better safe than sorry. For what it's worth, my husband has found a job as a local hire and has left Qatar for short trips and returned without any problems. His residency permit was handled by my company and went smoothly. Also we have a joint bank account here in Qatar and I have never been sent any type of notification when he withdraws money or uses his debit card.

Ditto...I'm American and have sponsored my husband and daughter. No problems. My employer first sponsored me and my family for the initial work visa for entry to Qatar and then once I applied for the residence permit, my employer applied to transfer my husband and daughter to my sponsorship. Maybe it depends on the employer and how much they are willing to assist. Otherwise, gender shouldn't be a problem.

Once you are married, your wife can sponsor you, many of my collegues got their hubbies under them. I have sponsored my kids and parents

so its not a big issue.

You can come to Doha on 14 days visa and extend another 2 weeks

apply online........33 nationalities do get visa on arrival

Make sure you use it wisely else she may have you kicked out of the country, not just your house ;)

That thread was very helpful, thanks. She will like the bit where she is texted every time I use the bank account. Sounds like a Woman's Paradise in Qatar!

Kiwi – some of the people in these threads above say they are sponsored by their wife (or sponsoring their husbands), try and contact them through PM or reviving the thread. Sorry I don’t personally know of anybody sponsoring husband/sponsored by wife.

Thanks for getting back. I have looked on previous posts, but it's all a bit confusing, most say you can't, but some you can. I am wondering if you know of anybody in a similiar circumstance that has been sponsored by their wife.

Kiwilite, did you do a search for this topic on previous posts? I do remember to have seen this subject coming up before and I’m quite sure a wife (yes you do have to marry!) can sponsor a husband.
