Doha• People who have not paid fines for traffic violations will not be allowed to travel out of the country once the new traffic law comes into force from
Tuesday, the Department of Traffic and Patrol Police said yesterday.
Those who fail to pay up the penalty for a traffic violation within 60 days, will be charged a fine of QR1 per day after that.
Violators could access the website of the Ministry of Interior after October 2 to check fines. The penalties would be posted on the website against a vehicle immediately after it has occurred.
A committee has been set up to frame new rules and regulations for driving schools with a view to ensuring that their performance improves to cope with new developments in the country.
Addressing a press conference, Colonel Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, Director of the traffic department, said yesterday that his department has suffered a lot in the past as traffic violators have left the country without paying fines.
“So, we want to make sure that this doesn't happen any more," he said, replying to questions. Those who fail to pay up the fine would not be permitted to leave the country.
When told by some reporters that the new traffic law was too harsh and no other country in the world has such a legislation, Al Kharji said: “We want other countries to follow in our footsteps.”
He, however, added that extensive comparative studies were conducted before framing the new law and traffic laws of a number of countries were reviewed in-depth.
Asked why there were lesser penalty points for drunken driving, he said laboratory tests would be conducted to find out if the presence of alcohol in a violator's blood is due to liquor consumption or intake of some medicine.
As for vehicles coming into the country from overseas and getting involved in violation, the official said they would be subjected to checks at the point of entry and the traffic department will be in constant touch with its counterparts in the neighboring countries on this issue
I went to Khalifa Town traffic dept to pay my fines before I left for the holiday. When I made the comment that both our cars were in my husband's name, therefore he gets my points, the lady either understood what I was saying (completely unreasonable rules) or more that likely misunderstood what I was getting at and simply said
"I will erase the points" works for me!
how much does a bike cost? I am going to buy a two wheeler on eid and use it to go to my office. To hell with the Traffic Department and to hell with their insane laws.
as far as i know, you cant leave the country (according to the new traffic law) if you not paying your fines. We due to leave on Thursday hence my husband panicking trying to settle his fines. :-(
There are so many holes in these stupid new laws. The authorities have gone from one extreme, not doing anything, to the complete opposite. You could smash up your car 2 hours before you left for the airport and no one would know.....ahhh Doha

I think I need to pay up as well...that numbskull who borrowed my car for a day got a violation and didn't tell me about it. I found out just now that I need to cough up QAR300 ...grrrrr
So Mr. Kharji is wrong! Violators may not be paying before they leave the country! Car owners will!

who will pay for the said fines but the company/your friend. You will go scott-free while the company/your friend will incur the expenses. And they may find it out once they re-new the car's registration, only with QAR 1 /day on top of the actual fine , it would be a hefty amount by then.
If I violated the traffic law while driving a company car or a friend's car a few days before my contract expires & I leave the country, how would they know at the airport that it was me?
