Jog your way to happiness, health, a higher IQ and better sex

We know why most of you hit the gym – to be slim, strong and have the biceps of Matthew McConaughey, the abs of Jessica Alba... and the brains of Albert Einstein?

These days most of us know the mainstream benefits of exercise. Regular workouts can help you lose weight, build muscle, increase energy and make you look extra hot in that teeny tiny bathing suit. But did you know that exercise can also boost brainpower, fight depression, improve your sex life and help your hearing?

Although we can all appreciate the advantages of losing those love handles, several new studies have uncovered remarkable new benefits to getting fit.

Check out 6 new reasons to renew your gym membership!

Jog Your Brain - Recent studies have shown that exercise has both immediate and long lasting effects on our brain. A new study at Rhode Island College suggests that a single aerobic workout can kick-start creative thinking and keep those resourceful juices flowing for hours afterward. Best of all, it's never too late to reap the workout benefits. It's reported that sedentary senior citizens who took up moderate-paced walking for 45 minutes, three days a week, were able to significantly improve mental skills that decline with age.

Good Night's Sleep - Regular exercise has been shown to trigger a more restful sleep. Afternoon exercise can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and help deepen your shut-eye. Additionally, postmenopausal women who exercised 30 minutes every morning had less trouble falling asleep than those who were less active. Regular exercise has also been found to help sufferers of insomnia. And, contrary to popular belief, recent research suggests that even late evening workouts won't hurt your ability to get to sleep.

Better Hearing - J new study found that cardiovascular training improves your hearing in the short term and helps to preserve it in the long term. Other studies have also found a correlation between fitness and hearing and that the least fit people tend to have the worst hearing.

Better Sex - Forget Viagra and get to the gym. After studying more than 31,000 men, it was found that physically active men have a 30% lower risk of erectile dysfunction than those who do little or no physical activity. Another recent study looked at 8,000 women aged 18 to 49 and found that those who exercised three times a week experienced 40% greater arousal, 31% have sex more often and 25% find orgasm easier to achieve.

According to a study, people who exercise regularly feel better about themselves, feel more sexually desirable and report higher levels of satisfaction.

A Stop to Smoking- Trying to kick your habit? Research suggests that exercise might help. The adrenaline rush and stress relief from a brief workout can replace similar feelings smokers get from tobacco. According to several smoking cessation programs, exercise can reduce the urge for a cigarette for those trying to quit.

A study followed 281 sedentary and non-sedentary female smokers who were trying to quit. The study found that smokers who exercised were twice as likely to quit and stay cigarette free than those who didn't do any exercise.

Fight Depression - A new study suggests that regular exercise may work as well as medication in improving symptoms of major depression. Researchers followed 202 depressed adults and found that those who went through group-based exercise therapy did as well as those treated with an antidepressant drug.

Okay, so let's see, exercise fights depression, helps you stop smoking, increases creativity, helps you sleep, enhances your sex life and improves your hearing (so you can hear the happy groans of your bed partner).

Gee thanks for waking up my guilty conscience. I haven't been going to the gym for like a month if not more. Just too much work that by the time I'm done I can't lift a finger. Plus, ramadan doesn't help at all! Grrrr....

Yes, me too.

I intend to get back on track again as from tomorrow. Haven't been out for a week since hub wasn't well and I sort of lost the impetuous to get up and go out first thing (I usually hitch a lift with him when he leaves for work) because HE wasn't going out.

Tomorrow, insha'allah ...

All this working long hours benefits me financially but is not good to my health (I'm diabetic). So, I'm heading back to the gym come next week or so and start doing my routine.

Hope it also help me to stop smoking...lol

Exercising is crucial for a healthy, happy life! :) Just as getting and giving love, have some me-time and spend time in the nature.

especially in this oppressive weather. And gyms in doha suck a** big time! unfortunately it doesn't help that I have a high blood pressure and high cholesterol level....sometimes I cant even breathe....but I still wont exercise...thats how much I hate it! I think for me the only way to go is some serious lipo and a tummy tuck
