Hi Namabiru,

I noticed you said you worked for Cornell. Are you located in education city? I recently applied for a job at one of the universities there. What is your impression of education city?

If I have a HSBC account in my home country if I open one in Qatar could I transfer money between the two accounts for free? or do I need to pay the money transfer fees applicable through money transfer services?

thanks for the replay,i got similar info from HSBC here so it is confirmed that i will not have my own car before 2 months at least!! still if you can help me with more info about the housing rent rate the choices, and what about the area around Landmark is it a friendly neighborhood or like industrial area camps,i get some photos from the net but i need a feed back from insiders who know the places.

again thanks for the replay and the details

Mmm... I just opened an account with HSBC, and I was asked if I plan to finance a car during my tenure in Qatar.

HOWEVER, you cannot open a bank account unless you have a residence permit. The reason I have mine opened after 1 week is because my 'company' (Cornell) has a corporate agreement with QNB and HSBC where new employees can open accounts before getting their RP, with the proper sponsorship (which is required anyway to open an account here no matter where you go).

Until you get your RP, plan on having an ATM card to access a bank account until you get paid for the first time.
