Safety

Everytime I mention life in Qatar, friends and family immediately mention how dangerous the Middle East is, especially after the attack on the Doha players.

Any comments?!!

So the guy was a nut and not in the religious way.

What happened? Did someone actually force him to watch a play? I'd blow myself up to if that happened.

But there are no attacks whatsoever in Qatar. The attack you're referring to at the Doha players was made by a Chechenyan mob.

I suppose they think UK attacks are random whereas in Qatar attacks would be specifically aimed at Westerners so the 'odds ' are more in Qatar.

Shootings, knife crime, bombs on buses, terrorists at airports, nail bombs under cars. What makes your parents think the UK is safer than Qatar? The worst you have to fear here is the anarchy on the roads.

Imminent invation by Iran and sure bombing by Americans to lirate Qatar

It's very dangerous here. Bombings at least 2 or 3 times a year, constant terror alerts, planes are always being held up and the airport is chaos....Oh wait that's London. :P

Even funnier that we live a few miles away from the woods that were searched over the alleged bombing threat to transatlantic planes!!

Also shootings and knife crime has happened in the same timescale a few miles away.....

It's funny that they mention an event that happened 2 years ago in Doha- have they forgotten the London bombings...how dangerous it is to live in the UK??

According to a ranking system that I have access to, Qatar has the same "security risk" rating as the U.K. No more, no less.

Qatar seems like a pretty safe place to me, and I have shared the same opinion with my family back home.

stay away!!!! uncle osama s in the neighbourhood!!!riots occur often!

the streets are filled with hooligans and vandals. there is a definite anti western bias here. all women have to walk with face covered....can you imagine all that?

did that satisfy you jayne? was that what you were expecting?

do it right - the first time!

No, I'm not in Qatar but husband would like to be. My parents are horrified by the idea and I'm stuck in the middle with dreadful guilt issues!!

Qatar is the most safe place in the area. Check statistics and professional reports and not rumors or media reports. Anyhow, don't know that media is talking negatively about Qatar when it comes to safety.

Also you can check USA State Department reports and recommendations where it talks about travellers guidlines

are you living in Qatar at the moment?

That incident was two and a half years ago! March 2005 to be exact.

It was random. sheesh! Why home in on that isolated incident?

I suggest you tell your friends and family (and yourself) to get up to date on what is happening when and where and, even, look at news closer to home for more recent 'bad news'!

Let me guess, they have never been to the Middle East? The media in the west is sensationalist and doesn’t distinguish between regions. For instance, I told my family I was going to live in Jordan and they mentioned the war going on in Iraq…. people see the Middle East as one whole mess instead of identifying that most places are indeed safe. Safer then a lot of Western countries I’ve been to!

I dont think what you said is correct?. There are many europeans living in here and enjoying their life.

Leading a life in doha is safe and secured, you'll enjoy a decent living and social life. Try joining social group, there are lot of your country mates who can help you better.

its ridiculous. maybe you watch too much TV...and avoid listening to people who doesnt experience being here in middle east (those people are just concerned about..) maybe you should read and watch the positive side and not the negative.. k?
