can your Company track down your Internet interests?

qatarisun
By qatarisun

I am just wondering if the Companies are able (are allowed) to track the web sites you are visiting, if your computer is a part of Company’s network?
Do they usually do it?

it is not about the internet, I think it is about breaking a "company policy" it is ridiculous if you will get sack just because you browse internet and chat!

Cheers!

Hopefully not. They are not that expert. And have more important things in mind. And workmates are using as well. And no boss in my office!:)

This is my attitude and i like it .. but that's bcuz i'm still single ..

I guess this attitude will be changed when i get married and have kids .. for me i don't care if i don't have money even for eating .. but i won't bear to feel that my wife/son/daughter is hungry and i can't do something for him/her.

So to those who have families and a list of responsibilties i do not suggest to mess up with ur company or to have the same attitude ...

and Be aware of what you wish for

that's a good attitude, don't care of losing a job! ;-)

We supposed not to put ourselves in the situation that the company will own us and slave ourselves to work and get nothing.

I am quite lucky that I can lose my job without worrying on how I can pay my bills after all I might not have any assets but I never make an option to have liabilities too.

Cheers!

I remembered when I was in West Africa for a short-stint job and most of our clients are Gold Mine Sites. The security is so tight that every single thing has to be monitored. I stayed in a Camp Site where the internet is only accessible to the place I have to configure and install LAN-POS Hardware and software system. I was given the password to access emails and company internet site though.

Back to my room, I had a phone which I can use only for local calls but didn’t stop me to tried setting up an internet connection using the configuration I had checked in my office computer and did a little experiment since I got a username and a password. I managed to get a connection to www and I was so excited and used it the whole night.

The next day, I went to work a bit anxious but everything seems so be fine and thought they might didn’t notice what I did. So after work, I came back to my room and tried it again it work but there came up a pop message “this is strictly prohibited” then they cut my phone line!

I was so embarrassed and my manager talked to me and asked me “how did you do that?” I didn’t get sacked and I was able to finish the work I had come for.

But lesson learned, “I cannot just get away crossing boundaries uninvited!”

Cheers!

they stopped all internet connections apart from internal ones to prevent staff surfing the net whilst at work (was a small insurance firm in a provincial town). They also read e-mails and tapped phones (as insurance companies do in case of any come back on policies incorrectly sold).

I sat on reception with very little to do and at least I LOOKED busy if I was on the net. When they blocked my access I rather deliberately sat there reading books or doing the Times Cryptic Crossword. Silly sods, honestly!

After I left the company I tried to e-mail a friend who worked there and was horrified to find I was blocked from sending e-mails to that company!!!! If an employee received X number of personal e-mails a week then the sender was blocked!

Oh I had so many ding dongs with the woman who managed that place it doesn't bear repeating here :D

I do respect them when it comes to others' boundries .. like driving in careless way .. that may cause damages to others' properties or lives ..

but if it won't hurt anyone but me i do like to bend them once in a while..

If they block specifically YM, then there is nothing that can be done. With Socks Protocol add your ISA server [the same proxy provided in IE LAN settings] as the IP address and add 1080 as the Port. Try both of them, Socks 4 & 5 and hopefully it will work, not unless they define a role there to block YM, then nothing will work and Meebo would do the job :)

Yes i access the internet through isa server Port: 8080 ... and no i cannot change the LAN setting

I know that both of them r using the same protocol that's why i wonder why Msn mssenger is working while YM is not ... i have tried many times .. but it's not working at all ..

Don't have much info. about the socks Proxy .. would u plz explain more about it ..

can you change your LAN settings or you have a fixed IP? What is about your internet access? Is there is any proxy in the company to connect to to have internet access?

It is strange, but how do you supply Proxy servers and access the internet through it? While they are blocking your YM then I guess they are using an ISA server or a proxy to block it. If your company is using ISA server, then they still can track you regardless of the fact using those, they still can track you especially if you are using 8080 port.

Regarding YM, did you try another protocol? Like MSN is Http based so if it works with you, then YM should work also if you are using Http. try using Socks proxy and supply 1080 as the port and try.

Meebo is good and works most of the time, but easy with ISA to add this URL of Meebo to the black list and it is gone.

I know about wut u said regarding monitoring the desktop or other programs capture print view of wut ur monitor viewing .. but regardless these programs i would like to ask u a question .. if i'm using a free proxy sites .. can they be able to track me .. i mean ok they will know that i have been to proxy site .. but through this proxy site i surfed other sites .. will they be able to track me ...

Actually that doesn't work here in my company as they using the camera capture program so they r not checking the URLs that i'm visiting .. instead the program is working as a camera .. capturing images from random computers and show them with details about this computer to track him or Block him ... but just wondering if they can know or not ..

One more thing .. the yahoo messenger is not working here in my company through a proxy .. although i checked the checkbox which says that i'm using a proxy and gived the IP of the proxy i'm using but it still not working ... although the msn live messenger is working very fine .. did they blocked the program it self from logging to the internet or wut??

Cuz in this case i need to use a website acting as a messenger like www.meebo.com .. is there any other solution

thanks in advance ...

King Edshel , thanks.. so are there a lot of people in your company who are "not working and messing around", or chatting, or hanging up in here on QL? And what are the compnay policy regarding these employees?

DaRuDe , what is your company policy regarding this matter? Do they allow you to search World Net during your entire work day?... lol...

just like DaRuDe said, it depends on your company IT policy. As a network administrator I can always do that like knowing which sites are visited through ISA Server as well as everything is logged there and sometimes No access is there or limited access to few required websites can be there.

Some Networking monitoring tools will let me access any Desktop or Laptop that I need without moving from my chair and not check their visited URLs, I can see their desktop in front of me and monitor the running programs and what they are doing at the moment but I hated the idea and requested that to be canceled as limiting the internet access is enough. Not my problem if their employees are not working and messing around, both the management and the employees problem and not mine.

If u hve a proxy in ur company they can track ur internet activities... then checking it all deponds on the companis It policy..as DaRuDe said..

Also frm ISP side tey are maintaining the internet activity records from each public Ip address. One can bypass tis by only using some anonymous proxies tat is not using logs.....

By anonymous• 3 Sep 2007 11:08

they can track it, but not frequently as like every single second.

Cheers!

and on monthly weekly basis a chart is made how much you surf and what sites you visited. Now that also depends what ur IT policy is all about.
