Alcohol

Hi, i'm a newbie at this forum and i suspect that this question may have been countless times before but anyway here goes. What is the position in Qatar with alcohol? My partner and myself are possibly moving to Qatar and i am curious. Now before people that i am a raving drunk who can't go a day without getting sozzled, it is just that we enjoy a glass or two of wine with a meal or maybe a beer or two. Is it acceptable to have acohol in the home? can you have a picnic at the beach and have a beer or two? Is alcohol only allowed at hotels? I'm not worried if it is a totally dry country and won't miss if it is, but looking at moving here i would like to know the facts and social customs...

Alcoholism knows no boundaries. It can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender and economic status. It could happen among the adolescents. In fact, statistics reveal that around 1.4 million youth between ages 12-17 have alcohol use disorders or AUDs and only 16 percent of this figure received alcoholism intervention and treatment.

I read recently in the Gulf Times that some of the poorer expats were drinking aftershave which was called hooch - haven't heard that in a long time.

I did hear that in Iran after the revolution that all the medical alcohol was bought out and people were brewing whatever in their bathtubs.

If they sell ethanol (used for embalming bodies), you could "cut" it 10 to 1 with water and then add the essences.

We did it in Kuwait and it wasn't unusual for someone to ask for a "stiff" and tonic.

Plus during this time of year, right before Ramadan you get next month's allowance this month. So that is even more booze you can buy.

but is the risk of getting caught, jailed, fined and then deported worth it??

It is well known that the Black Market is flourishing here in Doha, However, be well warned that if you are caught buying it, you can be deported so not worth the risk if you don't have a license.

Generally your company is responsible to issue you a letter informing the concession (The Booze Shop)that they permit you to but alcohol. With that letter and your RP you can go to the concession and get the permit which as said her before will cost you QR 1000,--.

Depending on your salary they will allot you a certain amount of points in the month for which you can purchase alcohol.

During the month of Ramadan there is not alcohol served anywhere and this year the concession will be closed from the 12th September until 15th October 2007.

The concession is well hidden so you will have to ask to find your way there.

You can collect the points for August/September/October to fill up your stocks before Ramadan.

Doha is not a dry city, for sure.

You need to get a liquor permit to buy booze from QDC (Qatar distribution center) the only retail shop for alcohol.

To get the permit, you need a letter from your employer stating your basic salary and your marital status, and a 1000 Qatari riyals (approx USD 275) as refundable deposit. Then a card will be issued to you, the card has a monthly limit (interms of money) based on your basic salary.

QDC is the largest liquor store that I've seen in my life. From wines, beers, whiskys, congacs, etc. Prices are reasonable, comparable to U.S.

You may have alcohol in certain hotels and clubs, Diplomatic club, intercontinental hotel, a place called Garveys where Brits like to hang out (white Brits only) and other several hotels.

The month of Ramadan is the only dry season, for riligous reasons. The sale of alcohol is prohibited in Doha, QDC shuts down.

I hope my contribution is of help to you and your partner, as I personally fall in the same catergory of "reasonable drinker".

but you have to buy a license,QR 1000 from the only shop in Qatar allowed to sell it.It has to be for personel use only.I think you are allowed 15% of your salary per month in the shop, its called the Qatar distribution center and its located near the woqod petrol station, dont know the road name, sorry.Get someone to show you where it is.

Only the big, main hotels are allowed to sell alcohol.

NO ALCOHOL is allowed to be drunk outside in public!

If you are caught walking home drunk from a hotel bar, you face arrest if you are doing something stupid.Even with a license.

qatar is definitely not a dry country...u just cant go raving drunk in public...its allowed to stock up at home if u have a lisence, to acquire that u have to have an rp first...for a beer or two at the beach u would have to be discreet...if u just enjoy indulging urself with liquor at the end of the day, there are some places that would be ok to visit depending on your mood and what kind of atmosphere u like in a place ;-P so just come over here and enjoy the little things that doha can offer..its better than nothing ;-P
