kendo

I've looked around, and I've found other Japanese martial arts (aikido, karate, judo, etc.), but nothing on kendo. I was told that there was some kendo at the Asian Games last December, and I'm thinking there may be some interest after this. Or, people in other arts may be interested in looking/trying out kendo.

I'm relocating to Doha in September, and kendo is what I practice. I'd rather not have to cross over to another art if possible, so I'm looking to either find a group somewhere in Doha, or generate interest in starting a kendo group.

Has anyone heard about kendo in Doha, or have any interest in studying a bit of kendo?

Hello,

I saw you're thread recently. I'm interested in recommencing kendo practice here in Qatar!

I have trained for about a year in Toronto Canada, starting 2 years ago. Recently i moved to Qatar, and am hoping to start training again. My Sensei in Toronto found this link, i'm hoping it still works!

Please let me know if you are training, and i will send you my contact info.

Thanks!

Ideally, I usually practise in a Dojo which has a clean and well-sprung wooden floor, suitable for the distinctive stamping footwork used by the bare-footed practitioners. However, I don't think I can find a Dojo such as that in Doha so still thinking about the place.

I imported the costumes from the U.S. at E-Bogu Store (www.e-bogu.com). Besides the price is reasonable, the quality is also relatively good .....this is not part of a promotion :-)

Hi Muhammed, if you would like to know more about Kendo, hakama, shinai, bogu and gi, you may look at some useful links given by namabiru. Let me summarize this type of martial art (quoted from Wikipedia):

Kendo or "way of the sword", is the Japanese martial art of fencing. If you have ever watched the movie "Last Samurai" (actor: Tom Cruise), you may have a description of this type of martial art. Kendo developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship known as kenjutsu. The movie "Star Wars" (Luke Skywalker, Lord Vader etc) is also inspired from Kendo.

Since the earliest samurai government in Japan, during the Kamakura period (1185-1233), sword fencing, together with horse riding and archery, were the main martial pursuits of the military clans.

Kendo is practised wearing traditionally styled clothing and protective armour (bōgu), using one or two bamboo swords (shinai) as weapons. Kendo may be seen as a Japanese style of fencing. The movements in kendo are different from European fencing because the design of the sword is different, as is the way it is used.

Protective armour (BOGU), is worn to protect specified target areas on the head, arms and body. The head is protected by the helmet-like (MEN) , the forearms and hand by gauntlets called KOTE, and the body by the DO and TARE. The clothing worn under the bogu comprises a jacket, or kendogi/keikogi and a hakama, which is a trouser-like garment with wide legs.

No worries-- hey, you interested in giving kendo a go? You'd be learning footwork for a while, then basic strikes.

Yes, I certainly do. I have sent you a PM, Tri. Check your inbox. I am extremely serious about doing some keiko, even informally. I have missed kendo a lot. My bogu is here, as is one hakama and gi. My shinai, unfortunately, are all in my sea shipment. I am hoping that will arrive very soon though. Then I will be ready to go.

Hi namabiru

If you practise Kendo I think we may practise together here in doha as long as you have your own Bogu and shinai

Regards

Tri
