asian woman in qatar

My family and I are considering a job opportunity in Doha. I was wondering if anyone can tell us a bit about how asian woman is treated there. I'm an Australian with Thai origin and I speak fluent English. I kept hearing that Asian like Phillipinos, Chinese etc are not treated all that well or a bit like a second class citizen. Is this true? My husband is Australian, I hear he should not have any problem.
I also run a Graphic Design Freelance business here in Australia and was wondering if I can try and do the same in Doha to keep my skills in tact (for when and if we want to move back to Australia) and for something to do. Is that type of work available in Doha and is it hard to set yourself up with a few clients?

If you are holding RP and go

If you are holding RP and go to HMC - everything is FOC.

---> it is not free. It is subsidized. YOu still have to play a slight amount. But the procedure is a pain ...

Hi Novita, Thanks for that.

Hi Novita,

Thanks for that. What do you mean by QL???

You sound pretty happy with life there and it's good to keep busy.

I think we will definitely look at the job seriously. It doesn't sound like a too bad a life. It doesn't sound like I can work at home though. But we are thinking of having a second child so it might not be a bad time to stop working. Do you know if Doha has good hospitals for giving birth?? Is it very costly? (or is that a silly question, everything sounds costly there!!!).

Well ... the social life here very good when you having kids. My daily chores endless of Mc.Donald birthday parties and playdate here and there. When i delivered my son 6 yrs ago ... i dont have much choice ... i delivered in American Hospital but wasn't too happy with it. Will not recommend american hospital to others. But nowadays when i talk to other mums who delivered their babies in Doha, they happy with Doha Clinic or Al Ahli hospital. The doctor who are wellknows is Dr.Amal Badi and Dr.Rizvi, mind you i dont have any firsthand experience with them, thats only the information i heard from other mums here. At the moment i think it will cost you around QR 5000 for normal birth and double of that for C section.

Have a look at this link :

That some of the playgroup around Doha. I used to do alot of that ... not anymore because my son in the older side now (6 yrs old).

Thats all i can think off ... shout if you need any other info, sometimes old thread got pushed down, so forgive me if i did not answer it straight away.

I dont work. But i have many friends who works part time or full time. I am not too sure about working from home though. Most of my friends they work at school as teacher or as a teacher assistant. One or two working in Qatar Foundation.

When you work from home it is consider as running a business, i am not too sure where you stand about this 51 percents Qatari partner. In Qatar you have to have a 51 percents of Qatari sponsor for doing any form of business ... regardless what sort of business (restaurant or shops or others).

I wonder any other QL members can shed some lights about this?

Btw ... you ask me what do i do for my sparetime. I dont work, but believe me i dont have much spare time left on my hand. QL and running around my 6 yrs old and try to keep up date with coffee morning around Doha keep me busy enough lol.

Good luck with the moving ... ( just in case you decided to take up the adventure living in Doha).

That's fantastic. Thanks Novita. I'm much reliefed. As you know I live in Australia and we are all the same here so moving somewhere a little unknown like Doha is a little disconcerting. Thanks for the invitation to the coffee group, I will definitely take you up on that one.

Do you know is it hard to get work for us wife? I'm a working mum (I work from home and run my own graphic design business) so I would like to keep a bit of that going. Otherwise what do you do with your time???Have you been living there long? Are you happy??

i am not in the mood of debate about anything. What i wrote on my previous post just based on my experience. I already told to 'original poster', i will be more than happy to help her out to set her foot under the table when she decide to come here by bringing her along to social coffee morning.

@sahlee:

I am not going to pointing a finger to perticular nationality, i know whatever nationality i mention it will just open another can of worm.

hv a good evening everyone ... :-)

women in all asian countries is considered ASIAN.. including qatari women.

who treats asian women unjustly? lebanese? egyptian? turkish? british? australian? belgian? U.S. citizen?

just a question..

regardless of nationality or race, in reality we will all go back to ashes.. i know this is not the issue..

the pride of being superior doesn't mean that he will be exempted from death..

so while our physical body exist in this world let us be fair, have the commitment to make other people happy in this way we will be happy too..

plenty of Asian Woman here ... me myself an indonesian with chinese background while my husband is a british. I have lots of asian friend with 'farang' husband ... Once you get here drop me a PM, i can take you to 'International Potluck Coffee Morning' that run by a malaysian lady with american husband (most members come from mix marriage and all sort of nationalities), also Tuesday Group Coffee Morning.

Alternatively ... buy a Marhaba book, you will find the lists of things going on in Doha

About second class citizen treatment ... So far i havent got any major problem. It does happened like people try to push in in front of you in the queue ... but once you say something to them they normally will back off.

I also find it being an asian ... i got a funny treatment from asian shopkeeper. When i got to certain shop ... they look at me like i can't afford to buy their stuffs. But when i come with my 'white husband', they will come like a flock of bird and trying extra hard to serve us. If you know what i mean.

Dont worry about asian woman in Qatar ... you will be surprise how many of them are here... :-)
