urgent information re driving license

when i came doha my company took me for a qatar driving license and i was told by our pro that i would have to surrender my uae license but would have it returned in 30 days which never happened now i am returning to uae and want my license back our pro is saying i will have apply for a new license in uae when i return there . it all sounds a bit fishy to me , any one got similar experiences
